BRIGG BLOG TOLD TO WRITE A BOOK

Sir John Nelthorpe School PE has posted a picture today on Twitter saying: "Well done to Brigg U15s cricket team, who won their first match last night v Barton by 20 runs."
It's good to see that the summer sport continues on a playing field where so many of us have enjoyed our cricket down the decades.
While chatting to a former hockey and cricket team-mate of  the 1980s and 1990s in the Yarborough Hunt pub on Saturday night, he surprised us by suggesting Brigg Blog should write a book about our Lincolnshire cricket memories.
We aren't sure there would be much of a market for a book in this era of the web and social media. But we do have many happy cricketing memories.
The current wet weather reminds us of conditions that prevailed in the late 1970s at Sir John Nelthorpe School when Town hosted their first ever tie in the national John Haig Club Cricket Knockout - similar to football's FA Cup.
This was against Brimington, from the Chesterfield area, and took place in constant rain and a chilly wind.
We played the minimum number of overs permitted, due to the conditions, and managed to win.
Similar wet weather was encountered at Farsley, where we played a second round tie against a team from the mighty Bradford League.
On arriving at the ground we received an apology from our hosts. One of their batsmen could not play against Brigg as he had been called up by Yorkshire!
Several hundred people paid to watch Brigg Town concede 300-plus runs in the field but then nearly sneak a very unlikely victory.
Heavy rain late in the afternoon saw us given 10 overs to make a reduced target, and come very close to doing so.
We also left Farsley with our share of the gate money, which was very welcome.
"Yours truly" was only the 12th man but had to do some fielding because a couple of team-mates were late arriving at the ground. After that we took over the scoring and were kept very busy recording the home side's efforts with the bat.
