HISTORIC FOOTBALL CLUBS MEET IN BRIGG TO KICK OFF THE SEASON
Brigg Town Football Club kicked off the new season with a friendly against Newark Town at the Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon (August 1).
Due to the virus-related restrictions, this had to be 'behind closed doors' without spectators viewing in the normal way, although the clubhouse overlooking the pitch was able to operate normally during play.
The Zebras went ahead through Reece Moody midway through the first half. However, the visitors levelled almost immediately after the interval and went on to secure victory.
As might be expected in a pre-season encounter, Brigg made extensive changes to their line-up during the game.
This was a meeting between two of the oldest clubs in the world - Brigg having been founded in 1864 and Newark four years later.
It is still unclear when Town's first team's 2020/21 campaign in the ToolStation Northern Counties East League First Division will be permitted to start. We'll keep you posted about this.
Brigg Town Cricket Club emerged from lockdown to begin their Coronavirus emergency-delayed season - at last - on Saturday (August 1), losing away to Barton in a "hard fought" opening group game in the newly-launched Challenge Cup. This is operating instead of Lincolnshire League fixtures each Saturday throughout August.
