IS THIS BRIGG SPOT IDEAL FOR A WILD FLOWER DISPLAY?

We'll have to wait and see whether grass cutting by the authorities can continue as normal in Brigg during the Coronavirus emergency. There are clearly many more pressing matters requiring council attention.
Brigg Blog has long held the view that some public areas long turned over to neat and tidy grass, might instead be seeded with wild flowers to assist bees, butterflies and other insects.
A good test bed might be the steep bank (pictured above) between Bigby Road and the Davy Memorial Playing Field.
Back in the mid-1960s this was not cut and many colourful butterflies, including red admirals, walls, common blues, peacocks and painted ladies, made it their home - along with plainer white varieties.
This was during the era of Brigg Urban District Council, whose cutting of public parks was infrequent.
Criticism of this policy came from some local people - even prompting letters to the press - but a number of folk today might perhaps take a different view.
Clearly there's a need to cut the grass on the rest of the Davy Memorial Field (pictured below) although at present youngsters are being instructed not to gather for football kick-a-bouts or to use the play equipment provided in the fenced-off area. Prior to the virus emergency, the slide had been removed on safety grounds with hopes that a new one may be installed in due course.
