Brigg in Bloom is working towards self-sufficiency, having taken on an allotment where plants will be nurtured for later use in flower tubs and colourful displays across the town. It is hoped to grow most of the blooms on display later this year, as part of a policy to reduce costs.
Coun Rob Waltham stressed: "A lot of our plants will be home grown."
Town Mayor Coun Sharon Riggall - the chairman of this hard-working group - gave an update to fellow councillors during the Town Council's January meeting, held in the Angel Suite, revealing that some vegetables may also be grown on the allotment.
Brigg in Bloom's efforts brought the town a silver award in a regional competition last year, but she stressed that 'going for gold' was the intention in 2020. Red, white and blue flowers would be on display.
The Mayor added that a lot of support had been forthcoming from the public. However, additional volunteers would be welcome - something she asked Brigg Blog to help publicise.
If you can give some time to the cause, contact the group by messaging the Brigg in Bloom page on Facebook, or send an email to enquiries@briggmarkettown.co.uk to be forwarded on to Brigg in Bloom.
Many people regard this as a worthy initiative which, during the summer months, produces colourful flower tubs on the County Bridge, along the riverside and beside the A18 on Ancholme Way and Barnard Avenue, plus many other locations.
But the group does more than this. Despite it being mid-winter, flowers have already started to appear in some planters like these we photographed on Bridge Street recently.
One of the major recommendations from last years assessing judges was Brigg grew more of its own floral plants. Any town can have fantastic displays from bought plants, but additional brownie points if Brigg sourced it own plants from local allotments.
ReplyDeleteSuch a scheme also increases volunteer involvement.
But I don't know why the Council is not seeking a greenhouse.....a poly-tunnel is useful, but has serious limitations. There must be greenhouses out there in Brugg that folks want to dispose of..
