BRIGG AREA SATURDAY FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

There was some joy but also some disappointment for Brigg and district football teams and their followers yesterday (Saturday, December 14).
Brigg Town went down 4-0 to Swallownest at the EC Surfacing Stadium (Hawthorns) in ToolStation Northern Counties East Division One. The crowd numbered 106.
Brigg remain 14th in the table with six sides below them.
Barnetby United are through to the final of the EC Surfacing Scunthorpe & District League's Carousel Hospital Cup.
In yesterday's semi-final they drew 2-2 - after extra time - with College Wanderers but won the penalty shoot-out that followed.

Barnetby Reserves hosted Limestone Rangers Reserves yesterday but lost 2-1 in a Johnsons Transport Ironstone Cup quarter-final. Oliver Frith scored Barnetby's goal.

RAILWAYMEN SECURE SHOOTOUT GLORY
Barnetby United secured passage in to the Hospital Cup Final (division 1) in dramatic fashion following a lengthy penalty shootout.
On the same pitch that they’d surrendered a 3-0 lead the previous week and down to 12 men plus 40 and 52 year old joint managers Lee Fielden and Paul Cottam as back up the Railwaymen took the lead as Cameron Hill slotted home a great free kick to notch his 132nd goal.
Wild wind and lashing rain lead to disruptive play, and up hill and into the head wind College equalised when great work down their left flank was met by a great header by  Richard Leaning.
1-1 at the turn both sides traded blows with no side creating clear openings. Short, custodian of the Railwaymen’s goal, was comfortable behind Wilson, Scott, Dawson and Bradley as Popple, Forrest, Brackenbury and Hartley grafted in midfield.
Chances were few and between until on 74 minutes Barnetby won a penalty but Hill saw his shot saved.
1-1 and into extra time. From College’s first attack the ball hit the post, rebounded and hit George Short. Not an own goal in footballing eyes, but a goal none the less.
Playing down hill and trailing Barnetby looked panicky  and trying to force the game despite Colleges centre half heading against his own post.
Second half of extra time, Barnetby, uphill, against the wind and the setting sun made one last push and in the 119th minute Talisman Brendan O’Callaghan broke through the inside left channel after being fed in by Ben Hunt and hit a thunderbolt from his left foot to send the game to penalties.
In a shoot out that went 8 rounds O’Callaghan, Hill, Popple, Hunt, Wilson, Scott, and Hartley scored Barnetby’s opening 7 as did College.
Decisively College missed their 8th which allowed veteran Andy Bradley the opportunity of scoring Barnetby’s 8th and winning goal which he duly did
