USED BY MANY BRIGG PEOPLE UNTIL IT CLOSED
A station in the Brigg area closed exactly 26 years ago as part of economy measures being undertaken by British Rail.
Having opened in 1866, Elsham station was removed from the national network on October 3, 1993.
It was the next stop after Barnetby for trains travelling between Cleethorpes and Scunthorpe.
The early 1970s picture above shows three passengers, including one railwayman, awaiting the next train heading for the steel town.
The flared trousers, checked jacket and platform shoes worn by the youngest traveller are typical of that period.
Land on the right had been occupied by sidings serving a limestone-related facility.
In the top picture we see the station with buildings still intact on the platform served by trains heading east from Doncaster towards the coast.
By then it was unstaffed, and a poster on display explains the workings of the recently introduced PayTrain system through which passengers tendered fares to the onboard conductor/guard.
Many people from Brigg drove or cycled to Elsham station to access trains on a daily basis. For some years they included railwaymen Ken Fisher who took these pictures. He was then working as an instructor for BR in Doncaster.
Some families from Brigg used Elsham station when they were going on holiday - hiring local taxis to carry them and their luggage.
