GREAT HISTORIC EVENT HELD IN BRIGG

A Brigg soldier received two medals on a memorable day for him and for the town 100 years ago.
During Peace Celebrations held in the town after the signing of the Armistice marked the end of the First World War, Sgt Zadok Clark was honoured with the Military Medal and the Croix de Guerre, a newspaper reported at the time in July 1919.
There were "memorable scenes" with a procession through the streets which included many demobbed soldiers and sailors, Red Cross nurses, decorated drays, police, local dignitaries... and even a German gun.
Wreaths were laid and the Last Post sounded at the new Monument war memorial, dedicated just a few weeks earlier.
A luncheon was hosted at the Angel Hotel for local servicemen who had survived the conflict. This was remembered very recently by an exhibition at Brigg Heritage Centre, staged exactly 100 years later. VIEW DETAILS HERE... The exhibition is expected to end this afternoon (Saturday, August 3).
The newspaper headlined its July 1919 news item A Day of Rejoicing and Thanksgiving.
After tea the "great historic event" ended with a fireworks display.
Another report, dated May 1918, noted that Mr and Mrs E. J. Clark, of Brigg, had received a letter from their son, Zadok, saying he had been awarded the Military Medal for a little job he did on the Cambrai front during the great German onslaught.
When Zadok was a boy, his family lived on Kiln Lane, the 1901 census shows.
In the late 1930s,  Zadok Clark, a local builder, gave cash prizes for essays written about school trips by young pupils.
