A new Brigg Heritage Centre exhibition has opened and is expected to be available for public viewing throughout this week.
Pop along to the Angel building, off the Market Place, and take a look.
The Heritage Centre is upstairs (lift available) and the new exhibition is housed along the walkway which connects its two wings.
On July 19, 1919 the Brigg Peace Celebrations Committee hosted a Victory Luncheon for heroes from the town who had survived the First World War.
The Lincolnshire Regiment's Sergeant Charles Taylor (1896-1990), of Happy Lane off Bridge Street and later Hawthorn Avenue, was one of those invited to this function in what was then the Angel Hotel.
Exactly 100 years later (last Friday) present day relatives of Sgt Taylor viewed the exhibition held in the same building. Some of them then lunched in the Cafe Courtyard, whose ground floor premises once formed part of the Angel Hotel.
Sgt Taylor was wounded in action in 1917. His medals and other memorabilia are displayed as part of the exhibition, together with items from his Second World War service with the Home Guard in Brigg.
Visitors can also listen to him speaking about the town as it was more than 100 years ago.
A tape, recorded during the 1980s by his family, forms part of the exhibition, and he recalls old Brigg personalities, shops and streets.
Also on show is a full transcript of what he has to say on the recording.
A Post Office messenger and later cycle repairer, he spent most of his working life as a coachpainter/signwriter at George Layne's premises on Bigby Street.
This was a specialist task, so despite being in his mid-70s Charles was still working part-time at the garage when it closed in the early 1970s.
Brigg Heritage Centre has done an excellent job in marking the 100th anniversary of the heroes' luncheon.
It's not yet clear when the exhibition will close to the public, but we'll let you know when that date is confirmed.
Please pop in, view the items on display and listen to reflections on Brigg life long ago, spoken by someone who was there at the time.
