ENJOY GIG BY THE DIRTY PITCHERS IN BRIGG THIS WEEKEND
There's bound to be a really big turnout of music fans in Brigg this weekend for a live give by renowned local band The Dirty Pitchers.
The Britpop devotees will be taking to the stage at Brigg & District Servicemen's Club, Coney Court, on Saturday, June 1, from 8.30pm.
The club is offering free admission to the show.
For those who've missed the boys' many previous local gigs at various venues, we'll put you in The Pitcher...
They perform songs made famous by bands like Oasis, Blur, The Stone Roses, Pulp and many others.
CHARITY KARAOKE: SOMEONE IN BRIGG WILL BE QUIDS IN THIS WEEKEND
A Brigg pub is hosting a musical fundraising event in aid of a cancer charity this weekend.
The Karaoke Fundraiser on Saturday, June 1 at the Britannia Inn, on Wrawby Street, starts at 7pm and will be followed by a disco until late.
We understand the best performance will be rewarded with £50, and there's a free shot from the bar on offer to every singer.
This event is raising money for Cancer Research as part of the Families Race For Life Journey. The organisers stress that singing is not mandatory - if you don't want to grab the microphone "just come along for a laugh."
Children will be welcome until 9pm.
BRIGG CRICKETERS START OUT ON THE CUP TRAIL
Brigg Town Cricket Club players have a change coming up tomorrow (Saturday, June 1).
Rather than a traditional 45 overs a side game starting at 1.30pm, they will be playing a Supplementary Cup match from 2pm which involves fewer overs (30) per innings.
Brigg will be making a short trip to play Messingham 2nds at the village's Northfield Road ground.
This is the second year of the Lincolnshire County Cricket League's Supplementary Cup which proved popular with teams when introduced in 2018.
Brigg have been draw in Group B and have other games coming up this month against Haxey 2nds and Scunthorpe Town 3rds.
Brigg need to win their group to progress to the semi-final stage on Sunday, June 30.
The final has been arranged for Sunday, July 21 at Messingham.
In order to save time, Supplementary Cup games do not have the usual prolonged tea break nor the 'spread' usually provided. Just a drink and a light snack is taken.

PERMISSION REFUSED FOR NEW HOMES NEAR FORMER BRIGG PUB
A planning application seeking permission to build four three-storey dwellings near a former Brigg town centre pub has been refused by North Lincolnshire Council.
Approval was sought for the development on land close to the former Nelthorpe Arms pub, on Bridge Street, which shut for good last May and has since been turned over to purely residential use. The rejected scheme also proposed the removal of trees.
Setting out its reasons for refusing to grant permission, the council said the proposal would:
- Have a negative impact upon the setting of adjacent listed buildings
- Represent an incongruous feature that would challenge the existing historic environment
- Impinge upon the character and appearance of the Brigg Conservation Area.
- Result in the unjustified removal of trees of high amenity value.
The Town Council said: "The vegetation has become important to birds and wildlife, and the tree has become an integral part of the street scene and should not be removed. The proposed buildings would not be in keeping with the surrounding area."
After making known its decision to refuse planning permission, North Lincolnshire Council gave notice that an application for listed building consent relating to this development had been withdrawn.
Anyone refused planning approval by a local authority has the right to lodge an appeal, if they wish to do so.

GET A PIZZA THE ACTION AT BRIGG PUB
A Brigg pub will be hosting a pizza night tomorrow - Friday, May 31.
Traditional pizza, prepared in a wood-fired oven, will be on offer at the Yarborough Hunt, on Bridge Street, between 4.30pm and 8.30pm.
The food - "a litle taste of Napoli" - will be provided by Pizza da Angelo.
If you can't make tomorrow's pizza night, there will be others at the Yarborough Hunt on Fridays July 26 and August 30.
LIVE MUSIC GIG IN BRIGG PROVES POPULAR
In its preview of a weekend gig in the town, Brigg Blog described Redboot as being a popular rockabilly/rock and roll band.
This certainly proved to be the case as fans of this kind of music turned up for the show at the Woolpack, in the Market Place, last Saturday evening, May 25.
Some took to the floor during the lengthy show which included hits made famous by many artists, including Chuck Berry.
This Saturday, June 1, Under the Covers, a popular band, will be performing an evening gig. All welcome - free admission.

NEW 40 MPH & 50 MPH SPEED LIMITS NEAR BRIGG ON THE WAY
A council scheme aimed at reducing two speed limits near Brigg are nearing completion.
Lincolnshire County Council is now consulting members of the public about proposals for the A1084 between Brigg and Caistor.
It has set a June 26 deadline for any objections to be made.
The council wants to introduce a lower 40 mph limit on Bigby High Road near the Brigg and North Lincolnshire border eastwards beyond Brigg Garden Centre, plus a new continuous 50 mph limit (rather than 60 mph) from Kettleby to Caistor.
These measures are planned on road safety grounds and are set to be included in an official legal Order to bring it to fruition unless someone mounts a valid challenge.
In its Statement of Reasons for introducing these 40 mph and 50 mph restrictions, Lincolnshire County Council says it is working "in partnership with North Lincolnshire."
The Government has made money available to councils from its Safer Roads Fund and the A1084 between Caistor and Brigg was one of four submitted.
Brigg Blog first reported on the early stages of this scheme last November.
We are pleased to see that some public notices are now being displayed in Brigg, setting out what's proposed, because many motorists from the town use the A1084.
WETHERSPOON'S ASKED TO RETHINK DOG BAN AT BRIGG PUB
Brigg Blog was recently contacted by a local resident who has called on national company J D Wetherspoon to re-think its pub policy which bans dogs (other than guide dogs) - something that's been in force since the middle of last year, 2018.
Wetherspoon's operates the very popular White Horse pub and restaurant on Wrawby Street.
The man told us: "We are regular customers at the White Horse, Brigg, most frequently in the morning for a coffee.
"Whenever the weather allows we enjoy watching the world go by sat at the tables out the front on Wrawby Street. There is, however, an issue which constantly emerges and perhaps a little publicity may bring a resolution.
"We are not, and have never been, dog owners. However, we have no objection to dogs accompanied by well-behaved owners sitting at tables nearby and have often enjoyed making a fuss of dogs sat at neighbouring tables. Recently, though, notices have appeared on the tables out the front of the pub informing customers that dogs are not welcome anywhere at any Wetherspoon establishment (assistance dogs excepted).
"Indeed, last week we witnessed a staff member confiscating drinks of customers who had not read the notices and who were sat out front with a very well-behaved dog (they did refund their money). "
He agrees that dogs should be banned from the building and the rear beer garden, but adds: "Surely there is a case for allowing them at the tables out the front."
He is not in favour of what he sees as a "blanket ban" on dogs, saying there's a 'no dogs allowed' sign on the outside wall but two others saying 'no smoking' although ashtrays are provided on tables outside and he has not seen any attempt by staff to move customers who light up.
Brigg Blog passed on these comments to the company and Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We take on board the comments by the customer, however dogs (apart from guide dogs) have been banned from all Wetherspoon pubs since mid-2018.
“It is not a decision we took lightly. However, not all dogs are well behaved, and we didn’t want any situations in our pubs or gardens where customers without dogs felt uncomfortable.”
ELSHAM TO FEATURE IN BIGGEST GOLF TOURNAMENT FOR MANY YEARS
The biggest golf tournament in the local area for many years starts at Elsham and Holme Hall Golf Clubs next week.
Two hundred and eighty golfers will be contesting the English Seniors Men's Open Amateur Championship.
Chair of the organising committee for the England Golf Union is Elsham member Dudley Jones.
Male golfers age 55 and over will come from all over the country arriving at Elsham for practice on Monday June 3rd. The competition starts on Wednesday 5th at both Elsham and Holme Hall.
Over seventy members have volunteered as helpers to ensure the golf is played competitively and the tournament runs smoothly. Roles include helping the ground staff, ball spotting, running the half way house, providing refreshments and car parking, while former Elsham captains will have the honour of acting as starters.
In the field will be golfers from the United States and Spain as well as the UK. All competitors will compete as scratch.
An electric leader board will add to the importance of the occasion. There will be three classes of competition, age 55 to 60, 60 to 65 and 65 and above.
There will be particular interest in the three Elsham Seniors taking part in the event. Graham Smith is Chairman of the Elsham Greens Committee, Mark Hoyle, whose father Mike was once the Elsham Professional and Phil Duffin the father of present Elsham Assistant Professional Dane.
Dudley Jones said: “This event is a very prestigious competition with the best senior amateur golfers aged 55 or over coming to the club. Spectators are welcome and we are very grateful to all the members who have volunteered to help with the event’s organisation. The competition rounds start at 7-00am and tee times continue until 3.30pm.”
Chairman of Elsham Golf Club Robert Taylor said: "The Clubhouse will be fully open and able to offer a breakfast lunch and or evening meal. I would like to personally thank Dudley Jones, Brian Wheatly, Colin Hopper and John Wilcox who have been responsible for the vast majority of the organisation and preparation for the event. Much of this work has been unseen and behind the scenes but without which the event would not have been the success and showcase of Elsham Golf Club which I am sure will be the case.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE THE BELLS ARE IN BRIGG?
How many Brigg people know where the Bells are?
Local craftsman Nick Bell, from a well-known family which has long-standing local links with the town, puts hardwood carvings featuring a bell on projects he has completed - like the summer house pictured here.
He was commissioned to fashion the Scandinavian-style building at an address in Brigg.
The property owner tells us he was very pleased with the outcome but later noticed "two extra pieces" - hardwood carvings of a bell.
This emblem is a family trade mark and there are a number of them around town.
"It would be good if we can get people to search out Where The Bells Are," the owner of the summer house suggests.
Nick is a Specialist Cabinet Maker & Joiner. He can be contacted by phone on 07811 476750.
BRIGG FUNDRAISING GROUP TOPS £16,000
A hard-working cancer charity group in Brigg has now raised well over £16,000.
The certificate seen above shows the gratitude of Pancreatic Cancer Action's national founder and chief executive for the work done by the support group in Brigg and contributions made by local people.
It is now four years since Lesley Whitehand, Zoe Hall and Andrew Markham started what Andrew calls "our little group."
They have asked Brigg Blog to pass on their thanks to local people for their generosity.
"Thanks are also due to Brigg Town Council, Brigg Inner Wheel and others who have helped us spread the word about this horrible illness," they add.
"Our thanks also go to the pubs and restaurants of the town for allowing us to collect on their premises.
"We will continue to hold awareness days in the area, and if anyone wants to help or ask for further information contact 07880 348449."

FORMER SCUNTHORPE UNITED CAPTAIN & BRIGG TEACHER REMEMBERED AT ELSHAM GOLF CLUB
A Scunthorpe United captain of the 1950s was remembered when Elsham Golf Club staged a Mixed Open event for the McGill Trophy.
After retirement Andy McGill became a publican in Brigg before training for teaching and taking up a post as a geography teacher at Westmoor School, now the Vale Academy.
An all round sportsman, he was a member and captain at Elsham Golf Club.
His widow Joyce presented the trophy following the Betterball Medal.
Geoff and Sue Lockwood of Elsham were the winners with a score of 65 net, followed by Brian and Cathy Wheatley of Elsham in second place. The Best Gross score of 74 was recorded by Paul McNicholas of Normanby Hall and Stacey Mitchell of Elsham.

BRIGG BLOG REFLECTS ON THE EURO ELECTION RESULT
A little later than planned, Brigg Blog reports the result of the Euro election. So our apologies for that.
Two in every three voters in North Lincolnshire passed over the chance to vote in the European Parliamentary Election.
It was held on Thursday, May 23 but the results were only announced last night (Sunday).
In the Yorkshire & Humber region, which includes Brigg, the Brexit Party won three seats, electing John Longworth, Lucy Harris and Jake Pugh.
Richard Corbett gained one for the Labour Party, Shaffaq Mohammed one for the Liberal Democrats and Magid Magid one for the Green Party.
Local voting totals for the North Lincolnshire counting area were:
Brexit Party 18,308
Labour Party 4,882
Conservative & Unionist Party 4,475
Liberal Democrats 3,866
Green Party 3,206
UKIP 2,234
Change UK 1,020
English Democrats 481
Yorkshire Party 466
The turnout in North Lincolnshire was 31.4 per cent.
We make no comment on the result or the political implications, but it seems strange in this era that we've had to wait so long for the result to be declared.
We were late posting our report but it didn't take us three days!
PICTURES FROM THE ENJOYABLE BRIGG RIVER FESTIVAL 2019
People from various age groups enjoyed the Brigg River Festival 2019, held on Saturday, May 25.
Ken Harrison, of Brigg Matters magazine, took these pictures from the River Ancholme and on dry land. We hope he didn't get his feet wet!
The festival, held on the same day as North Lincolnshire Council's May Farmers' Market, was based at the boathouse near Manley Gardens, off Bridge Street.
It was organised by Ancholme Rowing Club and Glanford & Scunthorpe Canoe Club.
Ken photographed some of the many volunteers who gave up their time to help with the organisation.
Between 10am and 3pm, visitors could try their hand at rowing, kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddle-boarding and other types of sport. Refreshments were available from the boathouse.
Thanks are extended to Ken for sharing some of his pictures with us. Watch out for more in Brigg Matters.

Organised by Lincsquad and with headquarters at Ancholme Leisure Centre in Scawby Brook, the event involved a 1.5k river swim, a 38k cycle ride, 7k by kayak and a 10k run through Brigg.
Ken reports about 100 competitors - solo and team members.
Watch out for more pictures he took which will appear in Brigg Matters.
