MEAT & GREET: BRIGG BUSINESS CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY
The weekend saw a well-known Brigg town centre business celebrating a major milestone.
Saturday, April 6 marked the 25th anniversary of S. Mundey Butchers, on Wrawby Street.
Proprietor Steve Mundey has thanked all his customers for their support over the years.
Some of them have passed on their congratulations in person and also through social media.
While we've been operating, Brigg Blog has reported on some of this shop's award-winning successes, including Lincolnshire Poacher Competition awards for the quality of its bacon and pork pies, among other products.
But the shop offers much more, including sausages, haslet, sausage rolls, pasties and meat joints.
The Mundey name has been a feature of the Brigg business community over an incredible timespan.
Below is a late 1960s, or perhaps early 1970s, picture of the proprietor outside T. Mundey's butcher's shop within the town centre.
Note the "Established over 300 years" lettering on the frontage, informing passers-by and customers of the heritage.
Brigg still has its Little Butchery, an alleyway off Wrawby Street, and previously had The Butchery, located on what's now Elwes Street.
Both names reflect meat-related premises of the past.
In the era before refrigeration became common-place, townsfolk went to the shops to buy their meat many times a week.
Some properties had safes at the back of their cool pantries, with metal mesh fronts to keep the flies away.
Brigg is well-served by butchery businesses today, while many older followers of our Blog will remember past premises like pork specialist Turner's (Queen Street) and Waters (Wrawby Street).
Barnard's, on Bridge Street, is still going strong under new management unconnected with the local family that ran it for generations.
