TIME TO BRING BACK BRIGG CHARITY MARKET?
Is it time to re-establish the once very popular Brigg Charity Market?
Brigg Blog puts the idea forward after taking the above picture last Saturday, showing a fish van and a solitary stall-holder selling fruit, veg and flowers.
That's the extent of our Saturday general market in March 2019!
Our call for change is made as North Lincolnshire Council opens the new indoor market in Scunthorpe town centre, in the converted former BhS store, after considerable investment, which is to be applauded. This replaces the one off Market Hill.
Brigg's charity market operated in the 1970s and 1980s, allowing local groups to sell a range of donated goods from stalls to raise some revenue, and offering local shoppers the chance to browse for bargains.
Would North Lincolnshire Council be prepared to try a charity market by putting up and letting out stalls one Saturday this spring or summer? If the trial proved successful, others could follow.
The added footfall generated by the charity market would potentially benefit the existing Saturday general market and other businesses within the town centre.
Tomorrow (Saturday, March 23) sees the monthly Brigg Farmers' Market taking place from 9am, accompanied by the general market.
Since North Lincolnshire Council launched the farmers' market at the beginning of this century, it has proved a major success, always drawing sizeable crowds, though bad weather can be a factor.
Thankfully, Brigg's traditional Thursday markets see many more stalls than set up on Saturdays.
The town gained its coveted market charter early in the 13th century when Brigg was just a small collection of properties near the River Ancholme.
We've come a long way since then!
