BRIGG FOOTBALLER AGED 69 SIGNS ON FOR HIS 55TH SEASON
A veteran Brigg footballer has signed on to play for a local team in the EC Surfacing Limited Scunthorpe & District Football League at the age of 69.
Colin Mumby, who played played alongside future England star Kevin Keegan for Scunthorpe United Reserves in the 1960s, put pen to paper to sign for Briggensians, in division one.
He arrived at the ground as a spectator to watch Briggensians play Barnetby United in a local derby on Saturday (March 2).
Briggensians' official Craig Benson soon furnished Col with a league signing on form and he put pen to paper, adding his date of birth in the box provided.
We can report that the so-called Oldest Winger in Town will be 70 in December!
He told Brigg Blog that, if he gets a run out for Briggensians before the end of the current campaign, this will be his 55th season in local football.
At the height of his career he played for a renowned club in Winterton.
A real sporting all-rounder, Col still turns out for Broughton 2nds, in the Lincolnshire County Cricket League, when called upon - and made some appearances last season in division three.
In his prime he was a hard-hitting batsman, a more than useful leg-spin bowler and a fine fielder.
During his years with Brigg Town, whenever a partnership needed breaking, he would chirp in the captain's ear: "Bring Mumby on!"
This often did the trick.
Sadly, Colin won't be able to celebrate his 70th birthday like he did his 60th.
The family threw a party for him 10 years ago at the Ancholme Inn, but that has since been demolished.
When guests downed their last pint and ventured into the car park of the Grammar School Road hostelry, they were greeted by heavy snow that had accumulated since wife Liz and their children got the party started a few hours earlier.
