PICTURES FROM THE BRIGG SUGAR FACTORY REUNION 2018
Here's an extensive selection of pictures taken at the Brigg Sugar Factory reunion 2018.
The annual get-together was held at Elsham Golf Club and attended by many former employees - men and women.
The event included food, drink and a chance to talk about old times at the factory.
Between 1928 when it was built on land at Scawby Brook near the New River Ancholme and the early 1990s when British Sugar closed it, the factory was one of our area's major employers.
In addition to those on the permanent payroll there were many seasonal workers employed on processing that year's beet crop during the colder months of the year.
Local residents of more senior years will remember the distinct aroma produced by the plant while this was taking place, and also the stream of beet-carrying lorries and tractor-pulled trailers that travelled along the A18 to deliver raw materials from farms near and far.
For most of its long life the factory processed beet, by-products and bagged sugar.
Part of the former sugar factory site is now occupied by power stations, but a good deal of land still remains with potential for redevelopement.
The former sugar factory sportsground, off Scawby Road, and its sizeable licensed clubhouse have both been unused for some years.
They are next to North Lincolnshire Council's Ancholme Leisure Centre.
The factory, with a range of sidings, was connected to the iconic Brigg railway line, which was used to export its products.
The plant even boasted its own shunting loco - steam and later diesel.
Sally Abbs has kindly provided these pictures on behalf of Gordon Dobbs - one of the event organisers.
