DETAILED PLANS FOR NEW BRIGG ALLOTMENT SITE EXPECTED IN THE NEW YEAR
A planning application seeking permission to create a new allotments site in Brigg is expected to be submitted in the New Year.
The plots are earmarked for a currently grassed area of Woodbine Park, with access from Preston Drive.
Investigations have confirmed that the land - once occupied by post-war prefab houses - is suitable for growing food and veg.
A new access road is to be built off Atherton Way, which will mean the removal of Brigg Town Council's current allotments on Grammar School Road.
North Lincolnshire Council has offered the Woodbine Park land as an alternative site for plot-holders to work.
For some time Brigg Town Council had a waiting list for allotments, with people queuing up to take them on in return for a small annual rent.
However, during the Town Council's latest meeting, Town Clerk Dinah Lilley reported that while all the allotments on Redcombe Lane were fully occupied, eight on Grammar School Road were now vacant.
Coun Mike Campion questioned why there had been such "a seed change" in demand for plots on this site.
Coun Chris Dyson felt the uncertainty surrounding the allotments "must be an issue."
Coun Rob Waltham, the Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said it was intended to submit a 'change of use' planning application in January.
Anyone interested in taking on an allotment can contact Brigg Town Council by emailing enquiries@briggmarkettown.co.uk
Once the planning application is lodged, people will have the opportunity to comment.
No timescale has yet been revealed.
