ATTENTION BRIGG FOLK WHO USED TO BIKE TO SCUNTHORPE STEELWORKS

In decades past, a good many Brigg people used to bike to and from Scunthorpe steelworks where they worked.
A few fit and hardy souls may even do so today.
Brigg Blog was among the cycling steelmen and women in the mid-1970s while holding down a very junior job on the works that didn't pay much.
This weekend will see the unveiling of a sculpture in Scunthorpe that depicts a worker and the bike he used to get to and from work.
Those from the Brigg area who've done likewise will be reminded of the long, homeward bound slog up Mortal Ash Hill whenever they see it.

Steelworkers sculpture to be unveiled in Scunthorpe on Saturday

FROM SARAH HOWE, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL

Scunthorpe Steeltown are proud to announce that the Steelworkers Sculpture will be unveiled on Saturday 3 November outside Oldrids Department store in the town centre. Proceedings will start at 12.45pm and the actual unveiling by Scunthorpe MP Nik Dakin, is planned for around 1pm.
Work is currently underway finalising the Sculpture plinth, which also has a 1940's period streetlight incorporated within it.
The theme is based on a male and female steelworker in the 1940's heading up the High Street, going home after a shift on the steelworks.
The Sculptures will invoke many memories for people connected with the steelworks, especially those who can remember the hundreds of cycles that were ridden to and from the works. Many women also carried out jobs on the steelworks during the war period, and the 'Women of Steel' are represented by this sculpture.
Following the Sculpture unveiling, the sculpture artist Ray Lonsdale will be at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre from 1.30pm to 3.30pm to talk to interested members of the public about his work and the making of the steelworkers sculpture.
Project Manager Adrian Holmes said: "The sculpture is all about everyday people that have worked on the steelworks over the years, right through to the present day and into the future.
“The steelworks and the people that worked there built this town and the sculpture is a monument to this and a mark of the town’s steelworks heritage.
“We invite all to come and see the unveiling which marks the final chapter of a project that's been over seven years in the making. Much of the time spent was applying to various funding organisations, and we will be giving our thanks on the day to all those that helped with this campaign.”
NF ADDS: If you are in Scunthorpe, the unveiling of the Steelworkers Sculpture on Saturday will take place outside Oldrids Department store in the town centre.
At the opening, long-serving Coun Len Foster, of Scunthorpe, will speak on the theme What the sculpture will mean for the townspeople.
