DOING THE SPADEWORK TO BRING ALLOTMENT WATCH TO BRIGG AND COMBAT CRIME
Brigg is considering whether to set up an Allotment Watch in a bid to prevent crime on the plots at Atherton Way and Grammar School Road, where green-fingered tenants grow their own fruit and veg.
The allotments are managed by Brigg Town Council, which has now authorised Town Clerk Dinah Lilley to meet a Safer Neighbourhoods Officer to discuss how this can be achieved.
Allotments can suffer theft of produce and gardening equipment, and also criminal damage.
Ms Lilley told the council's latest meeting that she was keen to involve tenants in the Allotment Watch scheme and wanted to consult them.
Coun Mike Campion suggested that allotments "seem to have dropped off the agenda" at Town Council meetings.
He felt this resulted from the council removing the committee that once oversaw the allotments, when tenants' representatives were invited to attend.
