BRIGG BLOG'S FAVOURITE LOCAL RAILWAY PICTURES OF THE PAST

 

Brigg Blog makes not apologies for taking an interest in  railways - our dad being employed on the local network from the 1940s to the 1990s.
Like many others, we joined the trainspotting ranks in the mid-1960s when steam locos were still about but being rapidly replaced by diesel traction.
For many years we were happy to produce special Nostalgia publications about trains for the Scunthorpe and Grimsby Telegraphs.
This led to a number of special excursions being run - usually hauled by preserved steam locos - which took readers on days out to locations as far afield as London, Carlisle and Blackpool. They all picked up passengers at Barnetby station.
Here's a selection of some of our favourite railway pictures of the past.


ABOVE: A B1 4-6-0 approaching Wrawby Junction in the late 1950s or early 1960s. There's a row of locomotives close to the turntable - a rare sight in the middle of the countryside, most of these devices being at loco depots or large stations.

Kirton Lime Sidings on the iconic Brigg Line with its unusual signalbox - built to this height so the signalman had a clear view over the bridge.

The tiny Brigg Siding signalbox controlled access to exchange sidings with Brigg Sugar Factory.
