COULD BRIGG DO WITH A BUTTERFLY PARK?

Green spaces and parks in Brigg have failed to gain nominations in a national competition.
We have tranquil, tree-lined Holland Park, near the railway station, which is popular with local people, and also the  Millennium Green, off Elwes Street, with plans for enhancement in the not too distant future.
But clearly, in expert eyes, Brigg has nothing to compare with beautiful Baysgarth Park, in Barton, which has gained  a worthy nomination.
So could Brigg do with another park? Something a little different.

The extensive grassy area off York Road has been vacant for many years.
Decades ago, when Humberside County Council was still the education authority,  this land was earmarked as the site of the town's new primary school but was later passed over in favour of Atherton Way.
Would people like to see trees and bushes planted on York Road field's perimeter to make it a park rather than merely an area of public open space?
Also worth considering, perhaps, is sowing a small area with wild flowers that would feed butterflies and bees.
The rest of the field could be left just as it is, the grass to be used by dog-walkers and young footballers fancying a kick-about.
And how about giving the field a name?  Butterfly Park sounds good to us!

Vote for your favourite park in North Lincolnshire to win an award

FROM NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL

Four parks in North Lincolnshire are in the running to receive the Keep Britain Tidy People’s Choice Award for being the UK’s favourite - and they need your votes.
Vote for your favourite park in North Lincolnshire and show how the UK loves parks.
The experts have had their say and in July this year, Central Park, Kingsway Gardens and Woodlands Memorial Park and Crematorium in Scunthorpe and Baysgarth Park in Barton were given a prestigious Green Flag Award.
Kingsway Gardens and Woodlands Memorial Park and Crematorium have received the award for 11 years running. Central Park for two years and this is the first year for Baysgarth Park.
The international Green Flag Award scheme recognises the best parks and green spaces in the country. A Green Flag is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities for visitors.
Now, the Award scheme is asking the nation to have its say and decide which parks and green spaces should receive the People’s Choice Award for being the UK’s favourites.
Whether you enjoy visiting a park or green space to play football, walk the dog, exercise or simply get away from the hustle and bustle, if you think your favourite deserves to be in the top 10 People’s Choice then cast your vote.
All you have to do is go to www.greenflagaward.org  find your park on the winners map and click the voting button. Once you have registered your vote, why not encourage others to get involved too through social media using the hashtag #PeoplesChoice
Cllr Ralph Ogg, cabinet member for Safer, Green and Cleaner Places said: “It is fantastic that we have not one but four Green Flag Award parks in North Lincolnshire. They are all deserving winners of the People’s Choice Award for best parks in the UK.
“The Green Flag Awards are a credit to the ground maintenance staff that work hard all year round to keep the parks looking their best. The increasing number of Green Flag parks across North Lincolnshire shows how important they are to us and communities.
“I would urge residents in North Lincolnshire to show their support for their local parks and vote for their favourite out of the four. We all know how great North Lincolnshire is, but this gives us the opportunity to shout loud and proud about it on a national scale.”
Voting is now open and closes 30 September, with the top 10 sites being announced on 16 October.
Paul Todd, Green Flag Award Manager said: “This year 1,883 parks and green spaces met the tough standards demanded by our Green Flag Award Judges but we want to know which parks the UK public love the most.
“The People’s Choice award is a chance to show how much your favourite park means to you. If it’s worth shouting about, make your voice heard and vote now.”

  1. Nrigg "Holland" park certainly needs an uplift as last I took a look it's over run with long grass with no paths hopefully whenever the area gets developed this much neglected park will be done too. a wooden bridge over cadny beck [butchers drain] would then develop a circular park walk around brigg.
millennium park also needs a revamp a third entrance at cadny beck bridge.kings avenue park needs two chair friendly entrances. york road is earmarked for a school either get one built or develop it into a park. woodbine park bottom area is in much need of a revamp the allotments are to be moved to this area ! east park is the best looked after could need more flower beds.western ave play area is brigg's least known park with even local kids not using it much.
