North Lincolnshire Council successfully promotes healthy walks, and Brigg offers some enjoyable routes to be enjoyed as summer approaches and later in the year.
You can choose those suggested by the local authority (see below) or tread your own path.
A couple we recommend take in neighbouring Wrawby and can include stopping for a refreshing drink at the village's Jolly Miller pub/restaurant, if you work up a thirst on a hot day.
BRICKYARD LANE: This takes in Wrawby Road and Grammar School Road, Brigg, linked by Brickyard Lane and Barton Road End, Wrawby. It is all on good, level surfaces.
KETTLEBY LANE: This one is more testing and involves less firm terrain. Turn off Churchill Avenue, Brigg, and follow the public footpath until you reach the area where sheep are kept near the drainage lagoon. Turn right and follow the yellow acorn sign across the fields to Kettleby Lane, Wrawby before returning to town via Brigg Road and Wrawby Road. Credit the farmers for keeping this path well marked, despite the growing crops (see pictures). This walk is particularly enjoyable for dogs, if you have some and they need exercising. It also offers fine views, with the landmark Claxby/Normanby 'golf ball' radar station dome visible in the distance on top of the Lincolnshire Wolds.
BROUGHTON OR CASTLETHORPE RIVER BRIDGES: Follow the newly-created Ancholme Valley Way from the County Bridge in Brigg. This route is also popular with cyclists.
STARTER WALK: Try Elwes Street, Brigg, towards Cadney beside the Old River Ancholme. You an either go as far as the village or turn back at any point if you feel you've reached your limit. The tree-lined stretch either side of the railway bridge is particularly attractive at this time of year. You might even spot a heron or two!
