BRIGG GREEN TO GET HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL
A new Brigg Holocaust Memorial is to be installed at the Millennium Green, off Elwes Street.
The winning design has now been chosen after students at Sir John Nelthorpe School and the Vale Academy were invited to submit ideas.
Their brief was that the memorial should not to exceed six feet in height.
Speaking at Brigg Town Council's latest meeting, Coun Rob Waltham said the quality of the entries was absolutely amazing.
He had shown some of them to people in Israel during a recent visit.
The chosen design, from an SJN student, will be constructed from wood and steel.
Coun Chris Dyson praised the design and suggested the use of Corten steel, which weathers to produce a chocolate brown colour.
Other parts of the memorial, he thought, might be painted silver.
Coun Waltham said they would need to consult with the artist.
Brigg has had a Holocaust Memorial on the ground floor of the Angel building for many years.
Every January a solemn service is held there to remember those people who perished through genocide.
Cutting the grass on the Green was flagged up as a priority during the Town Council discussions.
The authority has now taken over responsibility for tending this area of public open space with seating and litter bins.
At its next meeting later this month, the council will consider approving arrangements for the maintenance of the green, which was a year 2000 project originally overseen by a trust and committee.
The Town Council has put money into its 2018/19 budget for tending the green.
The Angel of the North is made from corten steel....but I don't think the new Holocaust Memorial will be so big...
