STILL AWAITING A NEW DAWN FOR BRIGG PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Ten years ago, in April 2008,  a  public meeting was held in the Angel Suite, Brigg, during where there were calls for the re-introduction of a ‘meaningful’ passenger train service.
About 50 people – members of the public, railway enthusiasts and councillors – came from as far afield as Gainsborough, Retford and Dronfield to discuss the topic in detail.
Chairman of the meeting, Edward Richardson, from Upton, near Gainsborough, described the turnout as very good and  felt those who attended were a ‘representative sample’ of the public.
Today, Brigg still only sees passenger trains on Saturdays, but campaigning to get a much better service continues.

For we are still awaiting a new dawn in public transport.

During April 2008 Brigg Blog reported that Sheldon Dowse's funfair was setting up on the old Atherton Way lorry wash site  for its usual spring stay in Brigg. That's now the site of Lidl's new store.
"Doubtless many youngsters will go along to enjoy the amusements," we suggested back then.
It is now some years since a fair came to Brigg. And that makes us wonder whether we'll ever see another.
Prior to using the old lorry wash site, the funfair was located on the Old Court Road car park but there were concerns it occupied too many spaces to the detriment of drivers.
In the 1960s and 1970s a fair (Franklin's?) used to be held on Horse Fair Paddock, alongside the old Grand Cinema.
That was when the paddock still existed - before the building of the grouped dwellings and the new inner-relief road which re-routed the A18.
April 2008 also saw Brigg Blog reporting that drivers  were flouting the restrictions in place on vehicles entering the pedestrian area.
Ten years on, nothing much has changed in that regard. This abuse of the regulations is still going on.
April 2008 saw a Saturday night wrestling show at Ancholme Leisure Centre, Scawby Brook, featuring grapplers from Lincolnshire, Nottingham and Manchester.

  1. People can attend as many meetings as they want, if there is no or little backing from the main council then you will get nowhere, far and wide people know that the support given to the Brigg Line by NLC has been woeful

  2. If a through train run by an open access operator to and from London is involved - for the convenience of The Honourable Member For Cleethorpes - you might get some of our local politicos interested. Anything else more down to earth for the daily benefit of local folk going about their daily business you can forget. Some of the stalwarts of the Brigg Line Campaign have already given up and walked away - there are far more comfortable ways of wasting time than talking to those who aren't listening!
