PLANS TO CLOSE NATWEST BANK BRANCH IN BRIGG COME UNDER ATTACK
Brigg Town Councillors have strongly criticised plans by the NatWest Bank to permanently close its branch in the centre of the town from mid-June 2018.
Coun Mike Campion even floated an idea that the council might discuss whether to terminate its own account with the bank.
A reported suggestion that NatWest's Brigg Branch was only being visited by 80 customers a week was described as nonsense by Coun Campion - based on his own observations as a user.
There was much debate about the issue at the Town Council's monthly meeting.
Coun Rob Waltham said Brigg & Goole MP Andrew Percy wanted a meeting with NatWest, and that North Lincolnshire Council was concerned about ATM provision and the affect on customers.
Coun Waltham agreed that the matter of whether to move the council's account should be put on the agenda for a future meeting.
Deputy Town Clerk Allison Hannath said the closure of NatWest in Brigg would affected the council "a good deal" when it came to banking cash.
She pointed to problems caused for people in Brigg without cars when it came to visiting alternative NatWest branches.
Brigg Blog expects that this topic will be raised again during December's council meeting.
HSBC closed its Brigg Market Place branch last June. But Lloyds still has a Brigg branch operating six days a week, while Barclays opens for three.
An increasing number of people now use internet banking and bank cards for transactions today, reducing the demand for counter services offered by branches and also cash machines.
However, many older people still favour the traditional way of doing things and draw out cash from their bank before visiting shops and businesses.
