Choosing the right care for you this Christmas

FROM ANNELINE WILSON, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE CLINICAL COMMISSIONING GROUP

As we countdown to Christmas, NHS North Lincolnshire CCG is reminding people of the services that are available to them for medical treatment and advice over the holidays.
Dr Robert Jaggs – Fowler, Medical Director for the CCG, explained: “If you are unwell over the holiday period and feel you need to contact medical services, please remember that you can gain access to health advice and information by calling NHS111. NHS111  is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is thus a far better alternative to waiting for many hours in an A&E department. NHS111 will ask you questions to assess your symptoms over the phone and give you the healthcare advice you need or direct you to the most appropriate local service.”
Your local pharmacist is also a highly qualified alternative and can provide confidential and expert advice on common health conditions and vital over-the-counter medicine for treatment. This will enable you to look after yourself and your family, and self-treat many minor illnesses and injuries at home by keeping your medicine cabinet and first aid kit well-stocked.
Most minor ailments will begin to get better within a couple of days.  It’s important to remember that, if you are suffering from a sickness and diarrhoea bug, please stay at home, rest, drink plenty of fluids, and don’t go to your GP or other places where you can spread the virus to others.
If you are on repeat medication, then we strongly recommend that you plan ahead and make sure you have enough medication to last  over the holiday period.
If you choose the appropriate NHS service for you, this helps the local NHS keep emergency services free for those that need them the most.

A&E and 999 services are for the management of life-threatening and emergency conditions only, and we need to leave this service for those that need it most.  Please avoid adding extra pressures to these NHS Services.
Christmas can be a really challenging time of year, so we shouldn’t forget our mental health and general well-being at this time. If you are finding the Christmas period overwhelming and stressful, and you’re struggling to cope, you may need someone to talk to. If you are living with a mental health problem, or know someone who does, there is support and information available during the holidays from various organisations.
