Messingham Show takes place tomorrow (Sunday, June 4) with many people from Brigg and district going along to enjoy the event.
It takes place on Holme Meadow, Holme Lane, DN17 3SG, and will be well signposted to assist drivers.
The organisers say it offers a great family day out, attractions including food, beer tent, trade stands, music, classic cars and horses.
Admission is £6 for adults and £3 for children, with family tickets available.
This will be the 112th Messingham Show, which is a major achievement.
Broughton Show is also still going strong.
So how come Brigg has nothing similar?
The obvious answer, looking back down the decades, is people were not prepared to put in the very hard graft required to organise a Brigg Show.
Perhaps there was a question about whether townspeople wanted a show and would support it in sufficient numbers.
But what about the current situation?
In recent times there has been very welcome and significant growth in Brigg events of many kinds.
So is the time right to consider a Brigg show, fete or gala.
Perhaps it could be along the lines of the event held in 2012 to mark a milestone for Her Majesty.
The Diamond Jubilee celebrations started in the Market Place and continued at Brigg Rec.
Although the addition of new facilities has reduced the available area for a show or gala, there is still a considerable amount of grass, especially if we include the youth football pitch near Wrawby Road.
Brigg Town Football Club might also be approached to make its pitch, car park and licensed clubhouse part of any show, fete or gala.
This has potential to generate cash for The Zebras.
True....and the Rec use to used as the site for the Brigg Bonfire Night..
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, the Rec has been used as the venue for the Community Fete, but it is now questionable whether the Rec remains viable for such events after its refurbishments.
Practically, there is now no green open space in Brigg to hold a town fete....and, if there were, one has to bear in mind, the potential alternative use of the travelling community's Horse Fair, vis-a-vis the planned redevelopment of Station Rd in the not too distant future.
Perhaps, the Vale could be persuaded to offer its sportsfield as a fete venue.....at least, the access, from Redcombe Lane, for example, is restricted, behind lockable gates.
