GENERAL ELECTION 2017: A FEW BRIGG COMMENTS
Voters at one of the main polling stations in the Brigg & Goole Constituency found a change to usual operations.
Voting was in the basement Lounge at the Angel Suite, rather than in the much larger function room upstairs.
This was because the bigger area had been hired before the election was declared six weeks ago.
The new lift was in operation for voters who could not manage the stairs.
North Lincolnshire Council polling staff and voters took the change of venue in their stride from what we observed during a busy early evening period last night.
Secondly, we wonder whether it is time for a change at future elections.
Shouldn't the count take place within the constituency?
Yesterday we saw all the voting slips taken to The Pods in Scunthorpe, where they were counted together with those cast in Scunthorpe County and a steel town ward by-election for a vacant North Lincolnshire Council seat.
Economies of scale applied through having central counts.
But we recall seeing pictures of the past when the election result was announced from the balcony of the Angel building.
This produced quite a spectacle with the winning candidate addressing the crowd in the Market Place.
Just a thought for the future...
