BRIGG TAKE ON SHAKEPEARE'S BALCONY SCENE
There will be no stage in Brigg Market Place for the 2017 Christmas lights switch on ceremony this December.
Instead, the civic party and guests will be up on the balcony of the historic Angel building, with the crowd beneath.
This change to long-standing practice will save money on erecting and taking down the temporary stage.
The Town Council agreed to try the festive change during its June meeting held on Monday evening.
Former Town Mayor Coun Ann Eardley was the only councillor to voice a little concern but it was pointed out that removing the large stage would free up a good deal of extra space in the Market Place for spectators.
Professional panto performers attend the switch on to entertain the crowd.
Could it be that one of them this year might be called Juliet and that among the 1,000-plus spectators below there could be a Romeo?
Brigg once had a well-known resident and charity fundraiser called William Shakespeare.
And our market and fair had been operating for some centuries before the playwright from Stratford penned his now world famous plays.
The switch from stage to balcony is an interesting one.
We must await public opinion in December.
It will be a case of As You Like It.
Did I hear someone asked where the children's choir was going to go and someone replied that they would sing from the balcony?
ReplyDeleteI hope not!
It's a very limited and exposed space with limited access.

Apart from creating the alleged more open space, I believe there is a strong element of cost-efficiency.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone thought of approaching the local scaffolding firm requesting them to sponsor a raised platform?

Back to the balcony....has anyone actually been on the balcony and imagined having several panto players in their voluminous costumes and a multitude of officials standing on the balcony?
ReplyDeleteFor a start, the small French doors open outwards....even perhaps too small for Widow Twangy to get thro' in her hooped skirt.
Thereafter, to allow a second person to access, the French doors has to be closed - a bit like a kissing gate.
With 2 people on the balcony, it's crowded and with 3, it's overcrowded.
Indeed, there is a potential danger of any sudden movement from Widow Twanky of twanging principal into space!
It could be a Comedy of Errors, Nige.
ps In R&J, Julie the was actually at a window.....not on a balcony.....
I wish it wouldn't do that....this pre-emptive text thing changes my words!!!
