Market Rasen Racecourse is playing its part in the biggest weekend of the year for horse racing.
The world’s greatest steeple chase – the Randox Health Grand National – takes place at Aintree tomorrow (Saturday). Then it’s ‘Super Sunday’ at Lincolnshire’s only racecourse.
There’s often a close link between the two. It is just three years ago that trainer Dr Richard Newland and jockey Leighton Aspell came on to Market Rasen after their Aintree triumph with Pineau De Re.
And this year the horse vying for Grand National favouritism, Vieux Lion Rouge, is a former winner in Lincolnshire, while the racecourse’s ambassador – teenage jockey Sean Bowen – rides Le Mercurey.
Nadia Gollings, General Manager, Market Rasen Racecourse, pictured, said: “This week is a thrilling one for horse racing. All the talk is about Saturday and the Randox Health Grand National. Visitors at Market Rasen on Sunday, in addition to the entertainment laid on, might even spot the winning jockey and trainer from Aintree.
“As for my tip for the National, I’m going for Saphir De Rheu. He ran a cracker in the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup, finishing strongly in the final two furlongs which suggests that an extended trip won’t be an issue. His jumping has been impeccable and he may just go in under the radar at decent odds.”
All three enclosures at Market Rasen – County, Tattersalls and Lawn – will be open on Sunday, offering visitors a choice of where to watch the races and enjoy refreshments. Adult tickets start at £7.20 – with advance purchase possible.
Gates open at 12 noon, with the first race at 2pm.
