The subject of Brigg Amateur Social Historians' monthly meeting will be Lincolnshire Lancaster Firsts - an illustrated talk by Jim Shortland.
Light refreshments will be served and a raffle held to help meet costs.
We expect a good attendance for this talk on a subject of great local interest, as Lancaster bombers were based at a number of nearby airfields during the Second World War, including Elsham and Kirmington (now the location of Humberside Airport).
It's a few years now since BASH arranged for a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster bomber fly-past for one of its events at Brigg Servicemen's Club.
It was a Friday evening in spring and many Brigg folk of all ages watched the historic aircraft, based at RAF Coningsby, make several passes over the town. A wonderful sight!
Our thanks go to Ken Harrison, of the Brigg Matters magazine, for this rare picture of two "Lancs" together in the Lincolnshire sky...

Taken a few years ago when the Canadian Lanc flew line-astern following the BofB Lanc over Elsham..
ReplyDeleteThe BofB Lanc was saved from scrap/static display in circa 1965 by No 44 Squadron based at Waddington...44 flew Vulcans and the Lanc was officially taken on strength.
I can honestly say I was one of the first to crawl all over it when it first landed at Waddington...thereafter, it was grounded for - it was in a state-some time for servicing; I was posted to Aden in the meantime.
One significant feature was missing from the Lanc for years - its mid-upper gun turret...one turret was found acting as a greenhouse in someone's garden and this was eventually fitted...
