BRIGG FOOTBALLERS LOSE AS BECKHAM-LIKE 50-YARDER HITS THE BAR

Briggensians FC lost 4-3 at home to AFC Blades in division three of the  T.S.W. Printers Scunthorpe & District Football League yesterday (Saturday, March 4).
The game was played at Sir John Nelthorpe School, Brigg.
It was a very entertaining, end-to-end affair and Briggensians had chances to at least level the scores.
The difference between the teams was Blades' livewire striker, Aiden Cooke, who scored all his side's four goals.
This match was a fine advert for the lower reaches of the Scunthorpe League and was well handled by the referee, Mr Atebe, who let the game flow whenever possible.
On the mark for Briggensians were Sol Hari (2) and Stuart Briscoe.
Both sides rattled the woodwork, the most notable being a 50-yard David Beckham-like effort from Briggensians which struck the bar. Had the shot gone in, this would have been a worthy nomination for division three's goal of the season.
Despite being beaten, Briggensians remain  second in the table - level on points with third-placed AFC Queensway - but the Scunthorpe lads have two games in hand.
Fourth-placed Barnetby United Reserves missed out on the chance to leap into second spot yesterday when their scheduled home game with bottom side Santon - at Silver Street - was postponed.
Barnetby United's first teamers did not have a fixture yesterday in division one.
These pictures show some of the action from yesterday's clash between Briggensians (blue shirts) and AFC Blades. In the one at the top of our report, Aiden Cooke (No 9) is seen slotting home a first-half goal for the visitors.
