ReplyDeleteThe Admiralty contructed Cranwell for Royal Naval Air Service training. There was another RNAS base at North Killingham creek....its aircraft did recce's in the North Sea, but were too slow to catch the Zeppelins marauding the Humber and region.
To tackle the 'Zeppelin Corridor', the Royal Flying Corps established bases at Elsham, Kirton Lindsey and Scampton...each of these evolved into significant Ww2 stations.
The Germans used radio-directional signals for both outward and inward sorties.....the Humber and Thames were a favourite location for bombing raids.
