Don't forget that today (Saturday, January 28) sees the monthly Brigg Farmers' Market being held in the town centre, alongside the general market.
Here's the chance to stock up on produce and goods of various types and to support our markets.
Brigg received its market charter early in the 13th century., and the farmers' market has won awards.
Just for clarification....while King John granted a charter to hold markets in Brigg (most likely to squeeze more dosh from the landowner) at the start of the 1200s...Pipe Rolls (essentially tax records) indicate that markets were already a feature 'on the bridge of Glanford Brigg' as early, if not earlier, as circa 1185...
ReplyDeleteThe Charter granted official recognition of Brigg Fair....annually on the Feast of St James - 25th July.....will leave it with you work out why it's now early August....the Feast of St James remains 25th July...
Also for info....the Chapel of Ease, the forerunner to St John's Church, located in Bridge St/Market Place (the road outside the Angel was at the time, Bridge St) was dedicated to St James, so why was the continunity broken with the parish church being dedicated to St John?
While we've gone a bit ecclesiastical.....apostrophes!..those grammatical symbols that are used either when there is a missing letter in a shortened combined word ..i.e....isn't for is not.....and to show possession, i.e. Nige's reporting pencil = Nige owns the reporting pencil.
ReplyDeleteIn the latter, when the possessor ends in an 's' an apostrophe s is added , i.e. James's pen....but there is an recognised ecclesiastical exemption to this rule.
For example, when the possessor is a significant figure in the New Testament....i.e. Jesus ....St James...the is only a need to add an apostrophe....i.e. St James' Church....and Jesus' Mum.
Amen
Would this be a good time to enquire about the correct use of ellipsis?
ReplyDelete@Bumpkin...
ReplyDeleteThe truth is that they are not really ellipsis......my comma key doesn't respond very well....even after belting it several times...it is very tempramental...so.. I tend to use a series of dots to represent a ','...blinking heck....it worked that time!
