BRIGG PUB CHANGE YOU MAY HAVE MISSED

Remember when Brigg pubs used to have to carry the licensee's name on a plaque above the entry door?
Long-serving landlords Tom Merriman (White Horse), Baz Fewster (Dying Gladiator), Tony Sykes (Black Bull), Bob Nicholson (Queen's Arms) and Alan Long (Ancholme Inn) had their names writ large for customers to see as they popped in for a pint.
We couldn't remember when this requirement was removed. So we put in a polite request to North Lincolnshire Council, which took over the licensing function some years ago from the police.
A spokesman for the council did some checking and told us: "The requirement to display names above the entry door of alcohol premises was no longer required on 24 November 2005, when the Licensing Act 2003 was enforced nationally.

"Although premises licences do not need to be displayed above the door any more, part B of the licence must be displayed somewhere on the premises."

PICTURED: Tom Merriman's name still above the door of the White Horse in 2011 - some time after his retirement.
