FROM KIRSTY WESTFIELD, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL
This summer Change4Life is bringing back the 10 Minute Shake Up to encourage children to ‘just keep moving’ and stay healthy.
The 10 Minute Shake Up for this year launches on 18 July and is inspired by the new Disney Pixar film, Finding Dory.
Children will be able to enjoy lots of fun activities and games with the characters from Finding Dory. This will help them reach the 60 minutes of exercise they need each day through 10 minute bursts of moderate to vigorous activity.
Evidence shows that children need a minimum of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per day. Doing just 10 minutes of activity as often as they can really does make a big difference and helps achieve good health and fitness.
Physical activity can lead to better academic achievement, increased attention span, improved behaviour and self-confidence in children.
Last year’s 10 Minute Shake Up saw an extra 40,000 children reach the recommended 60 minutes of activity a day. That’s the equivalent of nearly 1,300 primary school classes. More than 290,000 families signed up and some who didn’t took part as well.
It’s quick and easy to sign up online, visit www.nhs.uk/10-minute-shake-up. You will receive regular updates over the summer. Each child will be taken on a 10 Minute Shake Up summer adventure inspired by Disney Pixar’s Finding Dory.
Primary schools will receive PE curriculum linked to 10 Minute Shake Up with Disney inspired PE lesson plans with additional activities to use throughout the year.
In 2013/2014 24.1 per cent of children (aged four to five) and 35 per cent of children (aged 10 to 11) in North Lincolnshire were assessed as overweight or obese.

Coun Carl Sherwood, from Brigg, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “The 10 Minute Shake Up games, with a touch of Disney magic are a fantastic way to help kids get the recommended 60 minutes or more of physical activity they need every day. This year’s 10 Minute Shake Up is based on the new Finding Dory film.
“There are lots of Disney themed easy to follow activities and games that all the family can get involved in on the 10 Minute Shake Up website.
“Children should be regularly taking part in physical activities to make sure they are healthy. It can make a big difference to their development. Keeping active provides them with the best start and sets them up for the future.
“The 10 Minute Shake Up will hopefully encourage children to spend less time on their computer games and watching TV, and instead join in all the fun of games with 10 Minute Shake Up.”
