BRIGG SHOPPING WEEK & CHARITY MARKET REMEMBERED

Brigg Chamber of Trade used to hold an annual Shopping Week, and the one in 1980 ran from August 23 to 30.
There was extensive marketing to publicise this event far and wide.
The week included the annual Charity Market, with a record 52 stalls, and concluded with a Butterfly Ball at the Corn Exchange on the Saturday night, from 8pm to midnight (bar extension to 11.30pm). Tickets were £3, the price including a meal.
Among businesses going 36 years ago which supported the event and still trading today were:

• Brian's DIY, 24 Wrawby Street, where the Week's Specials included a Goblin Teasmade reduced from £56.85p to £39.95p.
• J.B. Wallhead & Sons, 52 Wrawby Street - "Menswear at its very best."
• Dunham's Bakers & Confectioners, Bridge Street - "Takeaway meals can be ordered in the shop or you can give us a ring and collect when required."
• Barnards Butchers, 4a Bridge Street - "deep-freeze meat supplied."
• J. & Y. L. Pickering, 54/55 Wrawby Street - "shoe repairs and keys cut."
• R.C. Dent's Spar, Queen Street (now Nisa Local).
• Trustee Savings Bank, 69 Wrawby Street (now Lloyd's).
