The major industry in England during the Middle Ages was the wool trade.....especially concentrated in eastern England, particularly Northfolk. Symbolising the importance of wool to the economy of the country, the House of Lords' Speaker's chair has a bale of wool in front of it....it is called the Woolsack. Wool was so important, the Battle of Crecy was principally fought to keep the English wool trade route open.....it wasn't until the Industrial Revolution that the focus of our economy changed...
