BRIGG TREE CENSUS

Christmas lights illuminating trees in Brigg Market Place

A Brigg Town Council committee discussed trees in the town centre at its latest meeting.
No-one seemed quite sure how many there are in Queen Street and on East Park, close to the Tintabs shelter.
Several councillors, from memory, under-estimated the number and there was no reason for them to leave the Angel Suite to go and undertake a  count. Especially as it was well after dark.
Brigg Blog waited until the sun came out at the weekend and had a stroll down to this part of town.
We can now confirm there are six trees in Queen Street and SIXTEEN at East Park.
The latter number came as a real surprise to us.
The councillors' discussion was about Christmas lights on trees.
Nothing has yet been decided put it is possible some of the trees will be illuminated in Queen Street, near the Tintabs, and on the riverside.
Grant money may be available be applying to North Lincolnshire Council.
February might seem a shade early to be planning for Christmas 2015, but it was pointed out the Property & Services Committee has long gaps between meetings.

  1. Extending the Christmas lights to the far extremities of Brigg has consumed a disproportionate amount of time and expense within Brigg Town Council. The town's precept, which will affect every household, will be increased by nearly 25 percent to accommodate plans for the 2015 additional decorations.
But how and why has such additional decorations assumed a significant time and financial priority when there appears to more urgent needs.
How does the voted expense on such temporal decorative lighting relate to the priorities for the town as expressed by the community in the 2 year study of the Community Led Plan?.....Did the folks of Brigg indicate that there was an urgent need to spend 'xxx' thousands on extra pretty lighting?
Is the present new Christmas decorative lighting, plus the newly planned programme to extend such lighting up and about Queen St for Christmastide 2015 going to prove cost effective - money well spent and that Brigg will be overwhelmed by mass hoards eager to see Brigg's fantastic decorations.......and will this draw continue for the other 11 months when the lights remain dormant?
If the target is to attract more folk into the town centre; to make Brigg an enterprising, dynamic and interesting place to visit throughout the year then there are many more effective and cheaper methods that can be acquired and deployed throughout the year.
Essentially, why has the council focused their attention and the bulk of their financial incentive to a period in mid-winter and in which is seemingly directed the image of Brigg's Christmas Fair night?
Where now is the finance to promote and promulgate Brigg's happening for the rest of the year?
Brigg is more than just pretty Christmas lights......
