MATCH REPORT BY BOB TAYLOR
Brigg Town must travel
to Padiham for a replay in the Preliminary Round of the F.A.Trophy competition
after the game on Saturday afternoon ended in a goal-less draw.
The visitors
started the game well, winning a corner kick inside the first half minute of
the game but this was eventually cleared. Brigg responded with a ball worked
down the middle of the field for Joe Lightowler to get a shot at goal but this
was safely saved by Marcus Burgess. Then Jody Barford collected a high cross
into his goal area. Robbie Bromley was finding space on the left wing and
combined well with Mark Sharples, who drove the ball across the face of the
Brigg goal. A free kick from outside the penalty area from Robbie Bromley was
just wide of the upright. Brigg had a good chance to open the scoring when
Kieran McCaffrey won the ball off Craig Haynes but his chip shot was over the
bar. After Steven Cooper was penalised for a foul outside the penalty area,
James Jenkins got a head to the ball but it flashed past the post. Padiham had
more of the possession throughout the first half but Brigg slowly got more into
the game and Elliott Broughton was played through by Joe Lightowler but struck
his shot wide. The same two players combined well in the last few minutes of
the first half but Joe Lightowler’s shot went over the bar.
After a poor
first half, Brigg began to show more determination in the second and created
the better scoring chances. Elliott Broughton won a corner kick off Craig
Haynes on the right wing and the ball was switched across the penalty area for
Danny Buttle, whose shot was blocked. The game ws in the balance and could have
gone either way with Padiham going close with a header over the bar from a
right wing cross. In the closing minute of the game, a powerful header from
Brigg’s Steven Cooper following a right wing corner kick was inches over the
bar.
So the two teams have to replay in North
Lancashire (Burnley area) on Wednesday evening.
Brigg Town: Barford, Wright,
Kingston, Bowsley, Cooper, McKay, Broughton, McCaffrey, Lightowler, Hutchinson,
