North
Lincolnshire Council is going out into the community to provide taster events
for adults with physical disabilities, to find out what activities they would
like to take part in.
Two out
of the three consultation events have taken place, which have been very
successful. The next event is on:
- Saturday 30 August, from 12.30pm to 2.30pm, at Ancholme Leisure Centre, Scawby Brook, near Brigg
The event
will have a range of free activities on offer for adults aged over 16 to get
involved in. There will be wheelchair sports, archery, table tennis, new-age
kurling and much, much more.
Information
gathered from these events will be used to decide what activities and sessions
will be developed for adults with a physical disability to take part in on a
regular basis.
All
adults with a physical disability are welcome to attend the events along with
family members or support workers if required. There is no need to book, just
turn up on the day.
With the
recent Paralympic success at the Commonwealth Games, more and more adults with
physical disabilities are realising that they can take part in physical activity
and be successful at it.
The
consultation events are a great way to find out what activities you can get
involved in and show your true sporting potential.
There are
many advantages to being active and getting involved in different activities
including:
- Socialising and meeting new people with a physical disability
- Better quality of life
- Improved health and wellbeing
- Increase skills and confidence
Coun Carl
Sherwood (Brigg & Wolds), cabinet member for customer services, sport and leisure,
said: “We are
holding these events to give adults with a physical disability the chance to try
out a range of activities. It will also highlight what activities could be
available for them to take part in.
“The
events are helping us to identify what activities people want to get involved
in, find out their likes and dislikes, what days and times would suit, where
they would like the activities to take place and any other ideas of activities
they would like to get involved in.
“Come
along to our last event and have a go at a range of different activities and let
us know what you think about them.”
This is intended to be a constructive comment - but how long has this sports consultation been planned?
ReplyDeleteDid anyone think about contacting Brigg Matters - due out in days - and optimise free publicity?
In general, I feel that Brigg and district offers a rich and a wide variety of events and activities - but many fail to promote themselves effectively.
Many people often say that things 'just happen' and would have gone if only they had known it was happening.
At least 2 vital things are necessary:
1. A promotional notice board in the Market Place (perhaps electronic) which advertises forthcoming events/activities.
2. Event organisers to exploit all avenues of advertising the event....
