BRIGG BUSINESSES COUNT THE COST OF ENGLAND'S WORLD CUP FAILURE

Spotted on Sunday in the window of the Brigg town centre shop we visit for our car oil.  A picture that says it all, really.
As England footballers head into their final game in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Brigg businesses will be counting the cost of our national team failing to progress beyond the group stage.
Many townsfolk like to go to our pubs and clubs to watch the games live on TV, while a good proportion of those who prefer to stay at home  do so with drinks bought from local stores and perhaps a takeaway meal.
If England had progressed further in the competition, there would have been more pay days for Brigg businesses.
Although some people will still watch the remainder of the World Cup without England, the games will not attract as much interest, or generate as much spending!
Those of us old enough to remember England winning the World Cup in 1966 are very fortunate. Given our performances in the tournaments held every four years since then, Sir Alf's '66 team could prove to be our nation's only success.... ever!
