VERY ENJOYABLE DECEMBER MEETING FOR BRIGG HISTORY GROUP
Brigg Amateur Social Historians met on Tuesday December 3 at the Servicemen's Club when the subject was A Jersey Lily - a most interesting talk by Josie Webb about Lillie Langtry’s
amazing life.
Born Emilie Charlotte Le Breton in Jersey in 1853, she married
Edward Langtry in 1874 and later moved to London. Noted for her good looks, she sat for
artists and started to mix with high society and was noticed by the Prince of Wales,
Albert Edward ("Bertie").
With friends such as Oscar
Wilde she embarked on a very successful stage career. She later became
successful in breeding racehorses and also became a US citizen. She
died in 1929 (but her legend lives on). This meeting was very enjoyable and very well
attended.
