MATCH REPORT BY BOB TAYLOR
Brigg Town FC began this F.A.Challenge Cup replay game with an attack down the left wing winning a free kick, played deep into the goal area but cleared after a foul on the goalkeeper.
Then a loose ball in midfield was won by Joe Lamplough, who struck a first time shot past the top angle of the goal. In Arnold’s first attack, a free kick from outside the area was played forward to Liam Corrigan but his attempted overhead kick drifted wide.
Brigg continued to have most possession in midfield but final passes lacked the necessary quality. After fifteen minutes, Scott Hellewell rose at the far post to head a free kick from the left goal bound but Lance Walker made a finger- tip save to divert the ball over the bar. Ten minutes, a golden chance to take the lead was missed after a right wing attack resulted in a close range shot over the cross bar. At half time, the game was evenly balanced and could have gone either way in the second half.
Brigg opened the scoring eleven minutes after the break after Liam Corrigan conceded a free kick in a central position just outside the penalty area and PAUL GRIMES drove a shot into the bottom corner of the net. This goal lifted the whole team’s confidence and ten minutes later, PAUL GRIMES was brought down inside the penalty area and hit the back of the net again with a firm spot kick. After seventy minutes, Brigg virtually made the game safe with a third goal coming off the head of LIAM DICKENS after Will Peers’ left wing corner kick to the near post. PAUL GRIMES completed his hat trick ten minutes from time after the ball was chipped through into the penalty area for him to pick his spot. Arnold battled gamely on to get something from the game and after Brigg made late substitutions again, they pulled a goal back three minutes from time when their substitute MITCH SLAWSON scored from inside the penalty area. Then they scored again in the final minute of the ninety minutes when JAMES PRICE hit a long range shot from the left wing into the far bottom corner of the net. Brigg was able to see the remaining minutes of added time through safely to proceed into the next round of the cup - a difficult challenge against Carlton Town away on Saturday week.
