BIGBY HIGH ROAD IMPROVEMENTS IN BRIGG

North Lincolnshire Council tell us that the "footway works" will recommence on Thursday ( June 6) with the surfacing of the existing reconstructed footway in front of the houses, using two-way traffic signals for traffic control.
On Monday, June 10 the section from the houses to the level crossing will be started using three-way stop and go boards, incorporating the level crossing, for traffic control.
All works should be completed by the end of Thursday,  June 13.
Regular Brigg Blog followers may recall that a progress report on this improvement project was requested at the last meeting of the Town Council, and that a member of the Cabinet at North Lincolnshire Council, the highway authority, who was present, said he would seek an update.

NEW TRAIN STOPS IN BRIGG - BUT NOT AT OUR STATION

Saturday saw a brand new train service come through Brigg but it didn't stop at our station to pick up any passengers.
Soon after 11.30am, the impressive, modern, First TransPennine Express eased alongside platform one without drawing to a halt. But it then had to stop just a few dozen yards down the track for a red signal - and stayed put for several minutes.
This was to allow a Northern one-car train, arriving from Cleethorpes, to clear the single line section beyond the level crossing. This Northern service was scheduled and we reckon it was running to time.

So it's a great shame the first First TransPennine Express on our line didn't stop in Brigg to pick up passengers. It wouldn't have taken any more time to do so.
This new Saturdays-only FTPE service is scheduled to run for a number of weeks. They seem to be getting on well with repairing the line at Stainforth and Hatfield and indications are that the usual FTPE service from Sheffield to Cleethorpes via Doncaster and Scunthorpe will resume in late July or early August.

Waiting at the red signal between Brigg station and the level crossing.

The Brigg line is a very valuable diversionary route, chiefly for lucrative freight, and has proved its value many times over during the problems on the Scunthorpe-Doncaster route.
It would be good to think that the above observations might be taken on board by FTPE management and that, from this Saturday, they might think of making a stop in Brigg station.

CRAFTS GALORE AND CELEBRATIONS IN BRIGG

RECEIVED FROM NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL

Brigg is the place to be on Saturday 1 June with an array of stalls at the craft fair and the Blessing of the Town’s Pumps.
A fantastic selection of crafts will be for sale in the Market Place at the craft fair from 9am to 3pm. There will be everything from knitwear and wooden toys to vintage items and artwork.
You will also be able to find baby products, blacksmith goods, memory boxes, novelties and themed items – just to name a few.
Brigg Town Business Partnership has revived the Pump Blessing event to coincide with the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Queen’s coronation.
Brigg will get into the spirit of celebrating by putting bunting up across the town and shop windows will be decorated.
The town has two historic water pumps – one close to County Bridge and the other on the corner of Grammar School Road. Each of the pumps will be decorated with flowers sponsored by Brigg Rotary. They will be blessed by Rev Enid Knowles and Brigg Town Councillor, Alec Depledge.
There will be dancing in the Market Place from 10am provided by the Grimsby Morris Men, the Tatterfoals Morris Group and the Bootleggers who are an Appalachian dance group. Music will be supplied by the Bootleggers and old style string band.
The first of the two grand processions will lead everyone to the pump near County Bridge at 11am. The second parade will leave the Market Place at 1pm and go to the pump on Grammar School Road.
Both parades will be accompanied by 20 local Brownies as flower maidens.
A North Lincolnshire Council spokeswoman, said: “It is going to be a wonderful day in Brigg with the huge array of crafts and entertainment. There really is something for everyone. It is excellent news that the pump blessing ceremonies have been revived. This is a well-known tradition in the town and I’m sure the day will be full of celebrations not to be missed.
“Brigg has lots to offer, so pop down to the Market Place and take part in the festivities. It is also a great opportunity to wander around the boutique shops and discover Brigg.”

£240 BONUS IF YOU BECOME BRIGG CROSSING PATROL

Here's a little part-time job in Brigg that will interest some of our site followers.
North Lincolnshire Council is looking for someone to become a school crossing patrol attendant in the town and has similar vacancies elsewhere.
The authority has announced it is to give existing and new school crossing patrols a £240 bonus in the form of high street vouchers.
There are 60 approved School Crossing Patrol sites in North Lincolnshire, and six of these have vacancies.
The council is looking to employ more people to work on these sites to protect children and young people walking to, and from, schools in North Lincolnshire.
Patrols will receive the incentive in the form of high street vouchers. They will be sent a specially printed cheque to exchange at the voucher shop. There will be a range of high street vouchers to choose from. Receiving a cheque will be dependant on whether they have been employed at specific times of the year.
If you are interested in becoming a patrol, contact the Road Safety Team on 01724 297463, for more details. You can also download an application form from the council’s website www.northlincs.gov.uk
School crossing patrols in North Lincolnshire work a minimum of five hours per week and a maximum of eight and a half hours per week depending on the site, term time only. It is split into two shifts a day, one at the start of the school day and the other at the end of the school day.
A North Lincolnshire Council spokeswoman, said: “School Crossing Patrol is a valuable and rewarding job for people of all ages. It is a service that is greatly appreciated by local communities, as it gives children and young people the independence to walk to school safely. Crossing Patrols are a familiar and integral part of the journey to school for many children.
“Today's Crossing Patrols are better equipped to carry out their job than ever before. They are trained in the operation of the school crossing patrol point, but also in issues such as dealing with aggression.
“We hope that by offering an incentive more people will want to take up this rewarding job of School Crossing Patrol as it is an important role in North Lincolnshire.
“If you are interested in becoming a School Crossing Patrol get in touch with the Road Safety Team.”

A BARRIER TO ATTRACTING MORE PASSENGERS AT BRIGG STATION

This was the disappointing scene near Brigg station on Saturday morning: Car-driving would-be passengers wanting to catch the train found the barrier down and had to park some way from the platforms. Whether North Lincolnshire Council, Network Rail or some other company is behind this we are unsure. But it does nothing to help attract passengers. Maybe someone in authority can find a minute to explain why the barrier has to be down on Saturday - the only day of the week that Brigg station receives a passenger service. It's clear that anyone with mobility problems is being disadvantaged.

WHAT'S THE BETTING WE CAN FIND MORE BRIGG BLOOD DONORS?

More blood donors are always needed - regulars sessions being held in the Brigg area and being publicised on this Blog whenever we spot one's coming up. This banner on the County Bridge, adjoining Ladbrokes shop, made us wonder whether it's a good bet that additional donors will be recruited.

GLANFORD BOAT CLUB REGATTA ON THE RIVER ANCHOLME IN BRIGG

Saturday saw plenty of eager folk attending the Glanford Boat Club Regatta in Brigg - beside the River Ancholme. Marauding pirates pulled alongside the Island Carr venue - perhaps the first time since the Vikings came our way. Did they get this far?

SPITFIRE AND HURRICANE MAKE BRIGG FLYPAST

Were you fortunate enough to see, and hear, the Spitfire and Hurricane flypast over Brigg at about 4.50pm on Saturday afternoon? These WW2 fighters from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby are always a magnificent sight, as is the wonderful Lancaster and the Dakota. We were just about to get in the car in Spring's Parade when we heard the engines, glanced skyward and saw the fighters overhead. Just as well they came back for another "pass" over Brigg, giving us time to get the camera on standby. The flypast was for the Glanford Boat Club regatta, on which we will be posting in the near future (with pix).

STILL SERVING BRIGG AFTER 76 YEARS

A picture of the new Brigg Post Office, in Bigby Street, appeared in the Hull Times weekly newspaper on February 27, 1937 leaving us to conclude that it had opened just a few days earlier.
Today, of course, it is no longer the Post Office but remains the sorting office for our area and has a useful "front office" facility where you can go and collect parcels and registered mail.
The Post Office is now housed within Martin's shop in Wrawby Street.
Many folk were unhappy when the Post Office was relocated but it seems to run very well and the more central location is an advantage.
The original Post Office building is a fine, surviving example of pre-war architecture in similar style to the former HQ in Scunthorpe at the junction of Church Lane and Oswald Road.
If you are wondering how Brigg Blog came upon the date in 1937, we were browsing the online archive catalogue of the old Hull Times for another reason and chanced upon this entry.

BRIGG TRIBUTE TO DRUMMER RIGBY

As a mark of respect, the Town Mayor of Brigg, Coun John Kitwood, will be laying flowers at the Monument War Memorial at 10am on Wednesday (29th May) in memory of Drummer Lee Rigby who was killed in such tragic circumstances last week.

BRIGG TOWN COUNCILLOR RETIRES

The retirement of Coun Julian Kidd from Brigg Town Council was notified to members at the AGM in the Angel Suite this week and it was agreed to send him an official letter of thanks.
Town Mayor Coun John Kitwood announced to members that Coun Kidd had resigned.
Coun Mike Campion said they appreciated what an excellent councillor Julian  had been over many years. He had done a tremendous amount of work and the personnel committee, in particular, had benefited from his knowledge.
Coun Kidd's resignation leaves a vacancy. This will be dealt with in accordance with the laid down procedure for parish and town councils. The likely result, depending on the public's response, will be co-option or an election. We will keep you informed. There may be people reading this who are interested in joining the council or perhaps you know someone who is.
Brigg Blog has attended the vast majority of council and committee meetings since Coun Kidd joined the authority and he always adopted a common sense and direct approach to whatever appeared on the agenda. Councillors and those sitting on the press benches will also miss his good humour which shone through during his time as a member of the council.

REFLECTIONS ON THE BRIGG TOWN COUNCIL ANNUAL MEETING

Newly installed Brigg Town Mayor Coun John Kitwood concluded the annual meeting of the Town Council by telling the members of the public present that the AGM should not be seen as typical.
He was referring to the run-of-the-mill, procedural business that has to be conducted. For the annual meeting is a time for once-a-year formalities, such as placing councillors on the various committees and assigning them to represent the Town Council on various outside bodies and groups.
One of the largest attendances on the public seats in the Angel Suite witnessed one of the least interesting sessions of the authority's year.
Addressing the public, the Town Mayor stressed that other meetings provided debates, with views being expressed by members on many topics.
All monthly sessions of the Town Council - and meetings of committees like Planning and Environment, Policy and Property & Services - are open to members of the public and are held either in the main Angel Suite room or the downstairs Lounge.
We publicise them in advance on Brigg Blog and try to highlight agenda items that we feel will be of particular interest to the public.

DEDICATION OF THE JOSH PARKIN COMMUNITY MEMORIAL GARDEN IN BRIGG

Josh's family at the Memorial Garden in Brigg
Thursday night saw the culmination of much hard work by many people in Brigg with the dedication of the Josh Parkin Community Memorial Garden in Brigg - close to the Old River, the A18 Ancholme Way Bridge and the new Lidl store.
Josh - a teenager from Brigg -  tragically lost his life in a car accident in 2010.
Members of his family were present at the ceremony, together with representatives of Brigg Town Council, North Lincolnshire Council, Brigg police, Josh's friends and Ken Harrison, of Wrawby, who kindly took these pictures.
The Vicar of Brigg, Father Owain Mitchell and Coun the Rev Alec Depledge, Deputy Town Mayor and Mayor's Chaplain, officiated and Josh's family thanked everyone for attending.
Brigg Blog is delighted to be able to reproduce below what was said on the night - for the benefit of those who were unable to be present.
It was  moving ceremony during which many of us took shelter under the bridge, due to a heavy shower.

A PLACE TO PAUSE AND THINK
Josh’s brother, Warren, and his friends originally approached the Town Council soon after he died, to ask whether the derelict site adjacent to the Ancholme Bridge could be turned into a memorial garden; the site being a popular meeting place for young people. However, due to the negotiations underway with Lidl and Tesco at that time, it was suggested that it was probably best to put such a project on hold until the extent of those development plans was known.
As work on the new Lidl site progressed earlier this year, it became apparent that the proposed site was not included in their works.  Therefore, as promised, discussions were re-opened, and a site meeting was organised between Josh’s family, Cllr. Carl Sherwood, North Lincolnshire Council Lead Cabinet Member for Safer Neighbourhoods and Town Mayor, as well as representatives of the Brigg Neighbourhood Policing Team, and the Humberside Traffic Police.
It was agreed that the initiative should now be expanded to create a Community Memorial Garden, and to use this opportunity to change the current public perception of this location by transforming it into a peaceful and tranquil area that any member of the community can gain comfort from.
In addition, the family made it clear that they wanted the garden to be a reminder of the consequences of unsafe behaviour and attitudes, not only among teenagers but for anyone who may be tempted to take a risk that could lead to such a tragedy; and discussions will soon be underway to look at methods of promoting and advertising the consequences of poor decision making, alongside the garden.
All of these conversations were taking place alongside the last minute frenzy by Lidl to get their store open, but the company still generously agreed to replace the brick wall around the site with gabbions to match the perimeter of the store site, and their contractor also turned over the land with a mini digger, and installed a litter bin and a dog litter bin close by, which were supplied by North Lincolnshire Council.
Since then, a working party has been held with the family and friends of Josh, to clear the site of stones, rubble and remaining plant growth, in readiness for landscaping.
The site has been turfed by North Lincolnshire Council.
Plants for a shrub garden have been donated by S. SmithT/A Pro-Pave Ltd, another local business, and will be planted by the family on the evening of the Spring Clean.
Work will then continue over the summer months, when it is intended to install some sleeper benches on the site, which will be donated by Grandads Shed.
In the Autumn the final stage of the planting scheme will take place, when Spring bulbs will be planted by Brigg Town Council, and a tree will be planted by the family in memory of Josh.
Josh’s family and their friends have shown tremendous patience whilst waiting to see if their idea of a memorial garden could be achieved.   They are to be applauded for their desire that the site should not be an empty gesture, and that it should also be a stark reminder of the tragic consequences of poor decision making, and the life changing impact on those left behind.
The hope now is that the whole community will come together to show and encourage respect for this area and for each other, so that new generations will learn from this tragedy, and also to ensure that anti-social behaviour and vandalism will not be tolerated at this beautiful location in Brigg.

BRIGG IS BUZZING TODAY

In addition to the monthly Brigg Farmers' Market on in the town centre today there are other things worthy of note.
Late this morning the new train service came through our station, run by TransPennine Express. There's an interesting rider to that. Watch for our future posting.
Meanwhile, down on Island Carr, off Bridge Street, the Glanford Boat Club regatta is in full swing.
Brigg Blog went along to photograph this interesting event, including the arrival of a boarding party of pirates. Pix and report to follow.
We are now nipping down The Rec to try and get a team picture of Brigg Town Cricket Club - at home this afternoon (1pm start).
12.52pm: Just got back from The Rec. Pitch marked out but no-one there. Has one side or the other defaulted on the fixture? If so, a real shame - given the sunny bank holiday weather.

MAY THE WEATHER BE KIND TO BRIGG FARMERS' MARKET

Brigg Farmers' Market in  May 2011. This Saturday we are hoping for ice cream weather!

Let's hope the weather is kind on Saturday (May 25) for the monthly Brigg Farmers' Market in the town centre. As usual it will be operating from 9am to 3pm.
North Lincolnshire Council refers to a Love Your Local Market event. It advises: "Visit this FARMA accredited award-winning market and buy delicious local food from the people who produce it.
"Now with over 30 stalls selling everything from venison to smoked salmon and home-made cakes to sauces."
Brigg has never been so well off for parking spaces, Lidl having moved  to its new site and left behind the extensive car park next to the old store. In the past, given the huge popularity of the farmers' market, it was sometimes difficult to get parked up in a prime spot near Spring's Parade. But not any more...
So now's a great time to pop into Brigg to visit the farmers' market and adjoining stalls on the general market  in the Market Place and down Wrawby Street. Why not call in at some of the Brigg town centre shops? And also sample the wide range of refreshments.

UNFINISHED FOOTPATH WORK IN BRIGG

When will footpath work on Bigby High Road in Brigg be completed?
That was the question posed by Coun Alec Depledge, the new Deputy Town Mayor, during a meeting on Monday night in the Angel Suite.
Coun Carl Sherwood - a member of the Cabinet at North Lincolnshire Council which is responsible for footpaths and highways - said he would make inquiries about the completion date and report back.

SUPPORT FOR MOVE TO TACKLE PROBLEMS NEAR BRIGG PRIMARY SCHOOL

Brigg Town Council is supporting proposals to make permanent the experimental 'no waiting or stopping' order around the Primary School at the end of Atherton Way - designed to reduce problems on the road.
The closing date for comments to be made to North Lincolnshire Council, which oversees education and highways, is May 30.
The Town Council was consulted and Coun Ann Eardley told a meeting of the Planning and Environment Committee that a letter about parking issues had been sent to parents of pupils.

OBJECTION RAISED TO BRIGG BANK PLANS

Brigg Town Council is objecting to signage proposed for Lloyds Bank at 69 Wrawby Street.
The banking group is seeking advertisement consent to display signage and also listed building consent.
Coun Jane Kitching thought one of the signs looked inappropriate, but Coun Chris Dyson could see no reason to object.
Chairman Coun Mel Oades told his colleagues on the town council's planning and environment committee that it was a matter of policy.
No objections were raised to an application to erect a single storey extension, including demolition of existing conservatory, at 2 Pingley Meadow.
Town councillors were also satisfied with an application to erect a single storey extension to the rear of 16 Wrawby Road.
North Lincolnshire Council planners will now decide whether to grant permission in each of these cases.

CALL TO TACKLE LITTER NEAR 'OLD LIDL' IN BRIGG

Tesco should consider paying North Lincolnshire Council to send their street sweeper to tidy up litter near Spring's Parade, Coun Mike Campion has suggested. He said it would be "common sense" for the retail giant to do so, and he hoped Tesco would agree, litter being "as present as ever" in this area of town..
Tesco acquired the old Lidl store but has since announced that it does not intend to proceed with building a planned new store on the site..

60+ FUNCTIONS ATTENDED BY BRIGG TOWN MAYOR

Immediately after being installed as the new Brigg Town Mayor, Coun John Kitwood began by thanking the man he succeeded - Coun Carl Sherwood, who had just completed his year of office.
Having become Town Mayor for the third time, Coun Kitwood thanked fellow councillors for again affording him the honour and then thanked Coun Sherwood - an asset to the council, fair to all and  an upholder of the non-political tradition of Brigg Town Council.
Coun Kitwood announced that his Appeal Fund would raise money for the Brigg Carers' Centre and the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.
Coun Sherwood thanked his partner and Mayoress, Louise Mikkonen, for all her support during his year as Town Mayor; the staff - Town Clerk Jeannette Woollard, Assistant Clerk Alison Hannath and Angel Suite Manager Karen Deeley "for ensuring everything ran as smoothly as possible"; and Father Owen Mitchell for being his Chaplain.
Coun Sherwood revealed that during the year he had attended more than 60 events as Mayor. It had been a special year, including, the Brigg celebrations on the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and also the Olympic Torch passing through the town.
The retiring Town Mayor said it had been pleasing to see regeneration work undertaken, the opening of the Library in the Angel, the Link Office and Heritage Centre, plus the return of Brigg Raft.
There had been refurbishment of the Tourist Information Centre and the Buttercross and improvements to the riverside, although Tesco had latterly announced it would not be developing a store near Spring's Parade.
The Mayor went on to thank Harry Wu (Kar Restaurant) for assistance with the Mayoral charity night and Coun James Truepenny for his work on the music night at the Britannia Inn.

£6,000+ RAISED FOR CHARITY BY BRIGG TOWN MAYOR

Councillor Carl Sherwood's Mayoral Appeal Fund during his year of office raised £6,112. His chosen charities were the LIVES First Responders and the Brigg and District Breast Cancer Support Group. Representatives of both groups attended the Angel Suite on Monday night to be presented with cheques.
Coun Sherwood was assisted by the Mayoress, Louise Mikkonen (above left, below right).
