Brigg Blog feels some sympathy for North Lincolnshire Council which has been an unfortunate victim of taking a more generous approach to helping Brigg shoppers with convenience parking near the town centre.
Regular visitors to this site will recall how the council provided some short-stay parking bays in Bigby Street - between Hewson House and the old Post Office - to benefit those stopping by to collect a parcel or nipping to local shops for a quick purchase or two.
You may also remember that the council answered calls to improve the nearby zebra crossing, where the markings were well past their best.
Sadly, things have backfired slightly.
For when the council marked out the area pictured here adjoining the crossing, using the correct present-day hashed markings, a problem immediately presented itself.
Some motorists thought the newly marked area was additional parking space and positioned vehicles there - reducing visibility from the Queen Street junction.
Rather than sending the "parking police" to nick these drivers, the council decided to cordon off the area and ring it with these temporary No Parking bollards.
Later this week, we expect council staff to make a site visit and draw up a way to move things forward.
Councillor Nigel Sherwood (Brigg and Wolds), Cabinet Member for Highways and Neighbourhoods, is fully aware. And he's the man most likely to approve the recommended solution.
Quite what that will be is not known at this stage.

....and what does the Highway Code say about the zig-zag markings either side of the pedestrian x-ing?
ReplyDelete'No overtaking the leading vehicle; no stopping; no parking within the area of the zig-zags.' if I recall.
It good to see, however, that NLC is not being too heavy-handed at the moment.....
But not wanting to drop folks into the fertlizer....the delivery lorry delivering to the nearby convenience store regularly parks in that little enclave whilst unloading....
Again, this highlights the need for specific LOADING bays about Brigg...and then we might start reducing the number of HGV's that trundle about the precinct, while folks have to jump out of their way..
We don't want the situation of an excited toddler running out with sweets and ending up under such wheels!!...so why, when there is such an obvious potential that we still allow an HGV/pedestrian mix?
The narrow bays created by the hashed markings look ideal for motor-cycle parking. The traffic cones were still there this morning (Friday Oct 5).
