Here's a model of Brigg's old Chapel of Ease - dedicated to St Mary.
It was built in 1699 on the site now occupied by St John's Church.
Ken Harrison, who has supplied the pictures, believes there was an earlier C of E place of worship - possibly dedicated to St James.
He points out: "The Feast of St James was on the same date (25th July) as the original date of Brigg Fair (Julian calendar)."

'Anchornites' - meaning a religious recluse.
During the Mediaeval times, there were numerous recluse cells and other religious buildings in the Ancholme valley.
'holm' means a low island, or low land in a swamp, or water.....but could there be a connection of 'Anchornite' to 'Ancholme'?
