BRIGG TALK ENJOYED BY MANY
By Phil Allen, Brigg Amateur Social Historians
Pete Batty gave his illustrated talk on “The History of Scunthorpe Area Fire Service (Including Brigg)” at the September BASH meeting held at Brigg & District Servicemen’s Club.
Former Scunthorpe station officer Pete started by welcoming to the talk Hughie Markham, who ran the Brigg fire station until he retired in the 1970s.
Pete described the awareness of a growing need for a fire brigade in the area
around the 1850/60s. For example records show that an 8 man horse drawn fire engine attended a fire in Sturton in 1864. And in 1904 Arties Mill had a fire and lost a large amount of grain and it sails - which were never replaced. Scunthorpe got its original fire engine in 1929 and in 1940 a “Dennis” fire engine. The fire service then had special training during the war years. The talk covered the period up to 1956, the year when a dramatic child rescue in a Brigg house fire resulted in a bravery award for fireman Charles Richard.
The event was well attended and very enjoyable.
The next BASH meeting, on Tuesday 4th October, is "The Life and Times of Queen
Mary 1867-1953" - an illustrated talk by Marilyn Roberts.
