Retiring Brigg Town Mayor Coun Ben Nobbs (pictured right) and Mayoress Barbara Morris presented a cheque for £818.40p to the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance at the end of his year of office.
The money was received, on behalf of the Air Ambulance, by Trevor Cherry, of Scawby Brook (left), during the town council’s annual meeting in the Angel Suite.
A further £818.40p will help prove additional equipment at the Davy Memorial Playing Field, between Bigby Road and King’s Avenue, in a “match-funding” initiative.
The Mayor’s Charity Appeal Fund benefited from events like the civic awards coffee morning, a collection at the civic service, a street collection, a jazz night and the civic charity dinner. There were also donations from groups and individuals.
In his retirement speech as Mayor, Coun Nobbs thanked Mayoress Barbara Morris for all her support, along with his Chaplain the Rev Enid Knowles, council staff and fellow councillors.
Coun Nobbs revealed 106 events attended during the year, including the 10th anniversary Brigg Farmers’ Market, although snow had meant cancellation of the official switch-on of the town centre’s Christmas lights.
Coun John Kitwood, Deputy Town Mayor, was elected to become the town’s first citizen for the coming 12 months. He was proposed for the Town Mayor’s role by Coun James Truepenny and seconded by Coun Penny Smith.
Coun Kitwood thanked fellow councillor for the confidence placed in him and praised Coun Nobbs’ efforts as Town Mayor.
“Diligence and attention to detail has been his trademark,” said Coun Kitwood.
He noted the retirement of “font of knowledge” Tom Glossop after 32 years as a town councillor, congratulated Coun Edward Arnott on his recent marriage, and welcomed new members of the town council Sheila Boughey, Rob Waltham and Chris Dyson.
Coun Kitwood then announced Coun Alec Depledge would be the Town Mayor’s Chaplain for 2011-12.
Coun Carl Sherwood was elected Deputy Town Mayor and Mayor-Elect, thanking fellow councillors for the honour and pledging to undertake the duties “to the best of my ability and for the best of the town.”
The end of an era - quite possibly the last picture of Tom Glossop in a Brigg Town Council setting. Tom (right) retired this month after 32 years on the authority (deciding not to stand in the recent election), but he attended the council's annual meeting in the Angel Suite, as a member of the public. We took this picture of him with new Town Mayor Coun John Kitwood at the very end of the social get-together which followed the Mayormaking ceremony.
