YANKEE DOODLE!
Could it be the Town Mayor of Brigg, Coun Ben Nobbs, is a follower of American football (gridiron)? During a complicated debate tonight while he and the Town Clerk were considering how to deal with proposals, amendments and counter-proposals, I'm sure I saw His Worship make the "time out" signal (one hand on top of the other to form a "T"). This is used in gridiron to stop the match while a team gets together to consider how it wishes to proceed.
....he could have been ordering a cup of tea, or a takeaway 'T'-bone steak, Nige.
ReplyDeleteThe Americans have 'time outs' in all sorts of team games.
In basketball, I believe, 'time-out' is called by the coach raising his arms.
....and if the game is being televised there are special 'time-outs' for commercial breaks.
Imagine that happening, Scribs in the Varsity Boat Race...
'Remember, when the red flag is raised, stop rowing and tread water...row like mad when someone waves a green flag!'
But with multi-talented Mayor Ben Nobbs, Nige, the origin of the 'T' could be closer to home.
The sign language for 'T' is similar, Scribbler......I can't really see BN playing Grid-Iron, - wrestling maybe, or being in a noisy pub, when knowing sign language is most useful, certainly!!
'Yankee Doodle' - the song, originated during the Seven Year War, Scribs.
ReplyDeleteDaft as it sounds, the Seven Year War wasn't 7 years and wasn't one war - it refers to various global conflicts - the Americas, Africa, India and etc between 1754 to 1763.
The song was meant to be a satire on the dress sense of the American colonial troops.....but later was adopted by the Americans themselves.
As far as I know our current Mayor isn't an NFl fan however I am a follower of the Dallas Cowboys. Councillor Arnott is an avid Boston Sports fan supporting the The New England Patriots and The Boston Red Sox. Meanwhile former Mayor Mike Dougherty told me once he had a soft spot for the Cleveland Browns.
