Humberside Fire Service advises today: "Before you tuck into (more) turkey leftovers, go and check your smoke alarm."
Sound advice, indeed. However, Mrs F recently replaced both ours - at either end of the stairs. The one on the landing even has a light which comes on to show you the way out, should the power be cut off in a blaze.
How about popping down to Wilkinson's, Brian's DIY, or other Brigg outlet of your choice, and replacing the ones you have?
We used to test our old ones from time to time - and replace the batteries if they started to "beep" - but we'd had them for years.
Better safe than sorry!
It's recommended that the batteries are REPLACED, at least, yearly....whether or not they are thought still to be good.
ReplyDeleteOnce can still use the old batteries in a clock, or a child's toy.....or...!!??
Better safe than sorry....a toy is not going to save your life.....but a fire alarm with good batteries could.
And why not install a CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) DETECTOR at the same time. About the same price as Fire Alarms.
(CO - deadly toxis gas to humans and animals - colourless and smelliless!!!! - a bit like me after a hot bath!!)
Place one in the lounge if the room has a gas fire.....another near the gas boiler. (check siting instructions)
They're better than keeping a canary!
ps Get one for dear old granny - if she hasn't got one already.
