Behind a metal fence with signs 'Demolition in Progress' the white elephant of the Environment Agency, Brigg's River Ancholme towpath toilet/washing block (originally intended for boaters' use) at the rear of Riverside Surgery is now a heap of bricks.
NF adds: Reference was made to its impending demolition at Wednesday night's meeting of Brigg Town Council's policy committee. The building suffered from the attentions of vandals and graffiti-daubers almost from day one.
Being the site of Brigg's old gas works, the land is considered to be contamined and has a limited use.
ReplyDeleteIt is owned by Tesco and I assume will become an extension to the car paking facilities.
However, I have always regarded this area to be an ideal position for a public slipway and mooring off the river.
As such, it would allow families to launch and retrieve small boats.
The River Ancholme has great potential for a recreational activity, but to get on the river one has to be a members of Brigg Rowing Club, or Brigg Boat Club.
The former is for rowinf enthusiasts; the latter for fortunate who are able to afford a decent boat.....neither really cater for the young family group who want to paddle a small boat about the river for a couple of hours on a sunny, summer's day.
Victorian Brigg enjoyed rowing about on the river....why can't C21st Brigg do the same?
