This is a welcome reminder for me that I'm down to speak on the History of the Scunthorpe Telegraph. Hope to see many of you on the night. Especially those heckling at the back!

  1. 1. Elsham airfield was originally developed in the Great War as a landing strip for a flight of RFC aeroplanes on Zeppelin sorties.
The zone between the Humber and Lincoln was regarded as the Zeppelin Avenue for the Germman airships raids on England.
Other RFC anti-Zeppelin flights were establised at the embryonic airstrips at Kirton-in-Lindsey and Scampton.

By WW2, Elsham became a heavy bomber base, as did Scampton, while Kirton (and Hibaldstow) became diversion (reserve) airfields.Kirton seem to specialise in training, conversion training and a 'resting' unit for fighter squadrons (Kirton's airfield was never developed from a grassed airstrip - ok for light aircraft, but not heavy bombers).

The RFC airstip was slightly west of the later WW2 airfield

    2. It will be interesting to listen the the talk on Edward 7th.

Edward 7th was pro-fascist and was befriended by Hitler.

There is now strong evidence that his abdication was more to do with political levering to remove him from power because of his political leanings, rather then the general preception that he had to abdicated owing to his relationship with Mrs Simpson...the latter acted as a convenient excuse that disguised the real issue.

Edward's pro-fascist persuation continued throughout the war.

It was planed that if Hitler ever defeated Britain, Edward would resume the throne.

After the war,Churchill adamently claimed that Edward, if ever he tried to come to the UK, be arrested and tried for treason.

Forget the romanticism - I hope the talk will expose the truth.
